So I’m not sure if this was a mortal sin or not…
So the other day I was talking to my boss about my cat. She’d started peeing outside the litterbox, and needless to say I was not happy about it. So I’m complaining about this and I say “G****mn cat!” Right after i said it, i knew i shouldn’t have.
So was this a mortal sin or just a venial sin? Saying things like that is a habit i’m trying hard to break, and although i’m much better than i used to be, i still have setbacks and slips of the tongue.
So, what are you thoughts? Am I being too hard on myself by focusing on my slip-ups rather than all the times i’ve caught myself?

Thanks in advance!
Nikki

Taking the Lords name in vain. I’d say venial but I’m no priest. The unexamined life is of little value. Taking stuff seriously and thinking and praying about it will lead you to God.

If it just slipped out, it’s venial at worst.

God Bless

I’m pretty sure something like that is at venial level, not mortal. In my compendium version of the Catechism it says it is ‘improper’ to use the name of God in ‘curses’ which describes what you did but it doesn’t say it constitutes grave matter (unlike full-blown blasphemy).

The other thing is that you can’t commit a mortal sin without full knowledge, and the nature of your question shows you didn’t have this, so it can’t possibly be mortal. And considering that it was something that just ‘popped out of your mouth’ without much thought, I would definitely say you’re being too hard on yourself, it can happen to anyone:)
