I haven’t heard of any formal response, but I do think there should be. The bishops’ statement is very misleading and needs correction. This kind of thing confuses Catholics who aren’t very well informed on their faith and gives anti-Catholics more fodder for their anti-Catholic agenda.

Two different qestions are involved.
1. This document
2. Is Scripture historically true?
I would just like to ask some questions about the document. Is this documents actually from the UK bishops or from a committee of their bishop's conjference? In the U.S. sometimes a committee has released a document without getting approval from the bishops themsleves, sometimes quite controversial documents, and then the press has said that it is from the U.S. bishops. Furthermore, I don't give a great deal of credance to secular papers when reporting on Church teaching, and would want to read it for myself, if it is from the UK bishops.

Your questions about the source of this document are the same I’ve had since I first heard about this. It reminds me of something that happened in the U.S. when a committee of the USNCCB published a document stating Jews didn’t need Jesus as their Savior. This caused a big uproar, and the press failed to mention it was a document a committee with no authority produced, yet they presented it as if the Catholic Church were changing her teachings regarding the necessity of Christ for salvation.

Everything I’ve studied regarding Church teaching on Scripture is that the Scriptures are inerrant, so where they are recording history, they are accurate. There is a post in this thread from October 11 that has a link to an article by Jimmy Akin. He analyzes the statements from the U.K. document and compares them to what the Church teaches. It’s very informative and helpful.

where can I download the documents referrenced in this thread to read them for myself? As for the young earth thing, introduce your spouse to the Talk Origins web site.

Also, ask her what sharks ate before the fall?
