Metropolitan Andrey Sheptytsky was the Head of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church for most of the first half of the 20th Century including World War Two. He died just around the time Ukraine was taken by Stalin in 1944 who went on to to liquidate the Ukrainian Catholic Church - torturing, executing and exiling most of its hierarchy including the late Metropolitan’s brother Clement Sheptytsky (an abbot in a monastery) who helped shelter Jews during the Holocaust. Stalin had Clement Sheptytksy sent to the Gulag where he died.

The film to which I am linking comes in two parts and it is in English and roughly 25 minutes altogether. It deals with Metropolitan Andrey Sheptytsky’s efforts to save Jews and particularly Jewish children in Ukrainian Catholic churches, monasteries, orphanages during the Holocaust. The testimony is provided by Jewish people who were saved by Sheptytsky as children and who now reside in Israel, England, and the US. Many I believe went on to become prominent members of Jewish society.

In part one, the first one minute is in Ukrainian because the film was broadcast on a Canadian Ukrainian television show called Kontakt so you just have to sit through the first sixty seconds and music, but after fifty-six seconds the film begins in English with Ukrainian subtitles. I believe it is worth watching.

Here is the link on youtube to part 1 of Saved By Sheptytsky:

Tonight actually was the first time I saw it so I’m going to rewatch it.

Sorry, after rewatching, I should amend above where I put some of the saved Jewish children “went on to become prominent members of Jewish society” to some of the saved Jewish children went on to become prominent members of Jewish society and of the world, including a Nobel Prize Winner. Sounds more proper.
