The Ukrainian Catholic community has a particular affiliation with Pope Francis, elected on March 13. The new pontiff, who is from Buenos Aires, was once mentored by Ukrainian priest Stepan Chmil and also speaks the language.

Cardinal Huzar of the Greek Catholic Church in Ukraine was impressed when he met Francis eight years ago at the conclave that elected his predecessor Pope Benedict XVI:

“I had not met him before, did not know him, but I knew he was from Argentina. So, I sat beside him and wanted to introduce myself, and suddenly he said in Ukrainian, ‘Glory to our Lord Jesus Christ’. I was very surprised!” Huzar enthused.

The current Head of the Ukrainian Catholic Church (left), HB Sviatoslav Shevchuk, was previously also the head of the Ukrainian Catholic Church in Argentina several years back when the current Pope (centre) was then the Cardinal of Buenos Aires so they are quite familiar with one another. The Head of the Ukrainian Catholic Church is also optimistic about Pope Francis granting the Ukrainian Catholic Church Patriarchal status, should the Pope so decide. As destiny would have it, both, as pictured, would go on to lead the Ukrainian Catholic and Catholic Church respectively after this picture was taken.

The Ukrainian Catholic Hierarch has also extended an invitation to HH Pope Francis to visit Ukraine. 🙂

Does anyone have any photos or videos of then-Cardinal Bergoglio celebrating the Divine Liturgy? I would love to see it.

I wish I did but then again I haven’t looked really, not until you’ve mentioned it now. If I find something tonight I’ll post it.

Here is His Beatitude speaking on this on CNS.
