Bishops of Rome Martyrs - Ukrainan Popes Saints

Bishop of Rome Kliment was martyr who died in Krym (now in Ukraina) and whose remains are both in Orthodox church and in Rome - gift from Saints Kirill and Mefodij.

Other Pope of Rome Saint who is died in Krym is Saint Martin, the Confessor/Martyr who died also in Khersones in Krym where he was buried. He was martyred for opposing Imperial monofeltism along with Maksim the Confessor. Кhersones is near modern city Sevastopl’ in Ukraina. Now there is at site of ancient Greek-Byzantine city a church to St. Volodymyr.

But St. Martin was buried in Church of Mother of God of Blakhern which is not now existing. This Holy Saint might also help to pray for better understanding of Catolics and Orthodox - as both I believe have his Feast days - April 27 (14 old style). Does Catolic church celebrate such feast day - remember that Martin felt betrayed by clerics of Roman church who elected Bishop of Rome Evgenij before he himself was imprisoned.

Are these the Saints you are referring to? I’m asking because you mention Saint Kliment, which would be spelled Clement in the west.

Pope Clement (88-97 A.D.) has had several important writings, including a Letter to the Church of Corinth and an important collection of ecclesiastic law attributed to him. He died a martyr’s death in Ukraine.

Yes, it is reputed that the relics of Pope Clement were brought to Rome in 867/8 by SS Kyrylo and Mefodiy, evangelizers to the Slavs, and were deposited in the Basilica of St. Clement. There is also the belief that some relics of Pope Clement that remained in Chersonese, Ukraine were taken to Kyiv by Volodymyr the Great and deposited in the Church of Tithes (Desiatnytsia Tserkva). For this reason Clement was honoured throughout Rus’-Ukraine on 8 December (25 November OS).

Patriarch Yosyp Cardinal Slipyj of the Ukrainian Catholic Church, after being released from his suffering in the Soviet Gulag in the 1960s, went on to name the Ukrainian Catholic University in Rome in Clement’s honour.
