Hi everyone.

Not sure if this is the right place to put this or not…

I was wondering… Is the Ukrainian Catholic church part of the Catholic Church? I heard that they submit to the authority of the Pope, but I could be wrong.

God Bless.

The Ukrainian Greek-Catholic Autonomous Ritual Church (UGCC) is headed by Major-Metropolitan Lubomyr Husar.

Metropolitan Lubomyr is a Cardinal and his church is subject to the authority of the Bishop of Rome.

You will probably find some people referring to Metropolitan Lubomyr as a Patriarch. There is a desire among the membership to have the church recognized as a Patriarchate, but so far Rome has not seen fit to do that.

The Eastern Catholicism section should have several participants from the UGCC. You will be able to ask more there.

And, FWIW, the Ukrainain Catholic Church is the largest sui juris Eastern Church in communion with Rome.

Yes, we are apart of the Catholic Church because we submit to the authority of the Pope and follow canon.
Our Eparchial Bishop, Most Reverend David Motiuk has his JCD (Juris Canonici Doctor) in Catholic Canonical Law (coolest Bishop ever:))

And we share some major similarities with Roman Catholics. For example, we follow (more or less) the same calendar, whereas the Orthodox church celebrates Easter and other feasts on different days.

We are a synthesis: as Ukrainian Catholics we are able to retain some our distinct traditions and Orthodox roots, while also being under the caring wings of the Roman Catholic Church. :angel1:

Actually, the Ukrainian Catholic Church in Ukraine (and several other places) follows the same Julian calendar as many Orthodox, including for both Easter (as virtually all Orthodox do) and the fixed feasts.

It is my impression that Catholic bishops have more freedom than their Orthodox counterparts on the issue of the Liturgical calendar - I don’t mean they can make up their own, but that a bishop in the Catholic Church can switch feast days according to the needs of his flock. For example, if a certain Feast day falls on a national secular holiday, a local Catholic bishop has the freedom to move that Feast day so his flock’s attention won’t be divided during the Feast.

Blessings

Oh Dear

a small correction if I may.

It was stated earlier

Lubomyr Cardinal Husar is a Major Archbishop , not a Metropolitan

Top: Archbishop and Metropolitan are synonymous within many Byzantine Rite particular churches; Further, the Primatial see is properly a metropolitan with the additional purview of being also the Major Archibishop.

Further confusing that issue further is that, in the churches that do differentiate the two titles, one is a title of honor, the other of oversight, and which is which varies by particular church! That is, in some, Archbishop is an honorific, and Metropolitans oversee a provincial synod, and in others, Metropolitan is the honorific and Archbishop the overseer of the provincial synod.

The Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church (UGCC) is the largest Eastern Catholic Church sui iuris. We are led by His Beatitude, Patriarch +Lubomyr and are in full Eucharistic communion with the Latin and all other particular Catholic Churches.

Marduk is correct; it is essentially up to the community to decide if it wishes to be Julian or Gregorian calendar. There are Julian calendar parishes in most if not all Eparchies of the UGCC outside of Ukraine (where all of the parishes are Julian Calendar).
