Yesterday, when I was in line to recieve the Body of Our Lord, the priest said “the Body of Christ” I responded “Amen” and he seemed startled and asked if I was there to recieve Communion. I may have inadvertentedly said it in a lower tone then usual but you are subbosed to respond Amen… right?

Yes!

Yes, you are supposed to respond “Amen”.

Is it possible that you said it so quietly that he didn’t hear you?

Something like this happened to me when our new associate priest came. I noticed that he would repeat “Amen” after I said it. He didn’t do it for the people who received before me. At first I thought is was because I say “AH-men,” but then I figured that maybe he didn’t hear me. I never had a problem with any other priest and he was kind of young to be hard of hearing, but I do know he is distracted easily by what goes on around him so maybe he wasn’t paying attention. Also he doesn’t look at the person when distributing communion so he didn’t even see me mouthing the word. So now when I receive communion from him I just make a point of saying it louder.

Yes we are supposed to say Amen. Many priests have taken it upon themselves to say Amen for the Communicant because many do not say Amen. It is part of the rubrics, but many don’t do it and yet they cannot be denied Communion.

Did the priest hear you? Or was he surprised you actually know what to do?

Unless you are at an Old Rite Mass…then we will just stare at you some more if you say Amen 😃

Pretty sure its an OF Mass because the OP said the priest said, “Body of Christ”.

Maybe the priest mistook you for someone else, someone that he knows for a fact is not allowed to receive Holy Communion, or somone who has always chosen in the past not to receive Holy Communion for some legitimate reason (e.g., awaiting an anulment). That would explain why Father seemed startled to see you present yourself for Communion.

I actually thought you weren’t supposed to say amen. In the Latin missal at church, it says in the margins, “The communicant does not say ‘amen’”. Is it different in the new mass? I don’t really know how many changes have been made in that area. Maybe the priest in question is just used to that way of doing things. 🙂

In the Ordinary Form of Mass, the priest says “The Body of Christ” and we reply “Amen” to signify our belief. In the Extraordinary Form of Mass, the priest says *“May the Body of our Lord Jesus Christ preserve your soul unto life everlasting. Amen.” *The communicant doesn’t reply.

I am the only teenager who goes to Mass regularly at my parish, him mistaking me for somebody else is highly unlikely.
