They are feasting on TV’s dying carcass, so to speak
Maximilian75, you might want to check out the last few sections of this conversation. Will Netflix be ad-supported in the near future? They are feasting on TV’s dying carcass, so to speak
That hasn’t historically been true. Remember Steubenville? There was video and the victims so-called friends turned on her and the media was wringing their hands over the formerly promising futures of the rapists. Things changed a bit after that. There is an AP guide for writing about sexual assault but reporters still refer to rape as “sexual encounters” or victims of child rape as “child prostitutes.” The Brock Turner case wss the first time that the media usually got it right but I still read comments about the victim including on a page that was supposed to be for the swimmer’s accomplishments. Not sure why they vilified all rape victims. We” being the academic “whole” of culture as represented these days in the media. Look at popular media.
No usually people ask what she was wearing, or question her motives and the perp barely suffers a ding to his career.Everyone rails against the man who one woman has claimed assault.
Time will tell. I think things are changing but it’s unpresidented so who knows. From that point on the man is demonized in popular culture.
That should be obviousTo me the more salient question is why don’t we believe victims/survivors, especially when they are women?
There is also often evidence in these cases that could be read as suggesting a consensual relationship, especially where the accuser and the accused person knew each other. From a logical and psychological standpoint, there are many reasons why an accuser might try to keep up some kind of contact, a business relationship or even a friendship or relationship with the accused. But if you’re sending friendly e-mails to someone or going on social outings with them, to meetings with them, etc. after they allegedly assaulted you, it’s harmful to your credibility when you later say you were victimized. It raises the possibility that something went wrong with the business relationship or friendship and you are now out for revenge.Lack of court evidence in many cases which makes me sad when victims are too upset to complete a rape kit.
There are also false accusers, which combined with a lack of evidence makes people cautious in ruining another persons life. Not saying the balance is reasonable though.
