Has there every been one? I know that all that is required is a 2/3 vote of the conclave, but that got me thinking: has any pope every been chosen unanimously?

Father, Son and Holy Spirit eh?😃 Fair point, I should have seen that one coming.😛 Has any pope other than Peter been unanimously chosen?

I’m not sure how you would know since conclaves are generally done in secret.

That being said, the Catholic Encyclopedia says St. Celestine V was elected by unanimous vote (granted, there were extraordinary circumstances involved).

The Cardinals take an oath never to reveal their vote or the outcome of the vote in general (other than, of course, who the winner was). So we don’t know whether any of the votes were unanimous - they could have been, but there’s no way to know. But some early Popes were elected by acclamation, so maybe that counts.

Since you can’t vote for yourself, there would always be at least one vote for someone else…

Is there such a rule?

at any rate, with the current rules, if it goes into a runoff, both of the final candidates are prohibited from further voting. So at such a point unanimity would become possible even if there is such a rule. (It would also be possible if they chose someone from outside)

Pius XII abolished that rule, and it does not appear in “Universi Dominici Gregis” or its subsequent amendments.
