My wife’s uncle is celebrating his silver (25th) anniversary and renewing their wedding vows. However they’re. Catholics and they’re having a “non denominational” pastor do the blessings. He has for a while been living in a house with 2 protestant families and I fear they’re swaying him. What can I do? Is renewing wedding vows even a thing Catholics do?

I’ve seen it done at a Catholic Newman Center for a 20-year anniversary, so yes, it is done by Catholics.

Bear in mind that we often renew our baptismal vows.

oh that’s right. However I’m still worried about him. It seems all their family’s friends are non denominational and the fact he chose that pastor instead of a catholic priest. He also joins them in their bible studies. Should I ask him if he is still catholic?

Is it ok to have a protestant pastor do the service for renewing their wedding vows?

Our current pastor will do a blessing for a couple’s anniversary but will not renew vows. He tells us that Catholics do not do vow renewals. I know it’s done at other parishes as I’ve seen it before

What I have seen done in Catholic churches is blessings. At one church, on a ceetain Sunday of the year, the priest would bless those who celebrated certain anniversaries that year.

It was really great to see people who had been married for 40 and 50 years!

Anyway, maybe that is what some have seen in Catholic churches? Along with, of course, convalidations and the like.

My parents were able to renew their vows in a Mass at their 25th wedding anniversary. Someone wanting such a ceremony would be advised to speak to the local pastor. There are specific words that are to be said. This is NOT a new commitment; it is a renewal of an old commitment, and the form recognizes this.
