Hi all,

Something happened the other day while I was serving at mass that I would like to get some opinions on. Firstly, my parish keeps the unconsecrated hosts in a tupperware container for storage. I was setting up the ciboria by putting the hosts in them when I realised there wasn’t enough hosts left in the tupperware. Anyway, I found a bag of hosts, tried to open them and they went absolutely flying everywhere all over the sideboard by the sink (kinda like ripping open a bag of potato chips). Luckily only one fell on the floor which I quickly consumed. The others I quickly gathered and put in the tupperware before anyone noticed. I am probably getting worried over nothing, but was I right to do this? I am pretty sure that the counter-top was clean and eveything. What would you have done?

Also, having to set up for mass, sometimes I notice that some (unconsecrated) hosts are misshapen or whatever. Should these be used or should I consume them or something?

Thanks everyone! 👍

If they are unconsecrated, then they are just bread. You do not have to consume them or treat them in any special way. As for the misshapen one’s ask your pastor if he wants to use them.

Be careful not to break your fast when you do these things. If they are unconsecrated, you do not need to consume them.

This is correct.

You can even throw away unconsecrated hosts if they have been dirtied or damaged - it’s just bread.

+1

You really should be asking your pastor about this, but I suppose your concern over this event has led you here…

I’m in agreement with others here, in that nothing really ‘bad’ happened. As already stated, the hosts are not consecrated yet, its just bread. I would assume though that any misshapen or damaged ones should not be used for Mass, and thus, discarded or eaten.

When I visited a monastery that makes hosts, they made sure they were made with the upmost care and were handled and packaged carefully, but any broken ones or misshapen ones were put aside with the scraps to be eaten. They sold bags of scraps and ‘damaged’ hosts at the monastery to munch on. I think you are ok.

God bless.

Sounds very OCD.

Why judge someone like that in a forum like this? If you feel that strongly about it, maybe a PM would have been more appropriate?
It didn’t sound like a judgement to me. Sounded more like an off-the-cuff impression of what this “kind of thing” sounds like.

We’re allowed to be politically incorrect here, right?

OCD/Scrupulosity if very, very, very, very common on CAF. Many trolls also pose as scrupulous too, just so they can post ridiculous stuff. It is common here on CAF.

Actually, it sounds more like ‘medical advice’, something we are not allowed to dish out here, and something I’m sure that the poster in question is not qualified to do as well.

Ahhh… Nothing like armchair psychiatrists with their fairy wands going around labeling people online with heavy diagnoses. Would they like to prescribe some pharmaceuticals to go along with that?

Jesus spoke about those who put loads on the backs of others!

No one here is qualified (even if they have the PHD) to do that here. You think a heavy label is necessary for one event? You have no idea who this person is to kick around a term that is so serious. You not only mock those who actually have it, but curse the OP with probably unnecessary concern- they just asked a mere question. You know nothing about them and can’t know anything about a person from ONE MERE QUESTION or even a repeat of posts. Its rude and very uncalled for!!! AND ITS ALSO MEDICAL ADVICE- which we are not allowed to do her at CAF. If you think the person is worrying too much about something, then just say the sentence, " I think you are worrying too much about … " fill in the blank.

What sounds like “scrupulosity” to you can be merely concern… and nothing wrong with that, … rather they ask away than worry about online armchair hearsay wannabe psychiatrists pinning a heavy label on them! You really ought to be ashamed!

** If you’ve got the PHD in Psychiatry, state so, and prove you are in practice, otherwise, stop it. ** No real psych would do such a thing online. Honest to GOD. IF they would, their license should be revoked, as its seriously unprofessional and abusive.

Also… you have psychic abilities now to say who is a troll and who is not? Just treat them as Jesus said to- with love, not harsh judgement. You don’t have to answer a post, you know? Jesus was innocent and hung along with two criminals. Watch out you don’t do the same to the innocent.

Take a look at OP’s other posts. The poster either has OCD issues that they need professional help with or is troll posing as a OCD person.

Keeping a pair of scissors handy near the stored hosts would help!

One point to make:

Hosts that are already broken or mis-shaped or burnt or otherwise “not up to standard” really should not be consecrated.

Of course, this happens sometimes, and it’s almost unavoidable.

Nevertheless, no hosts should be offered for consecration if they are somehow defective.

Don’t worry. It happens to quite a few people who regularly set up for mass. I’ve had it happen to me before a few times. It is simply bread. Here in the Philippines, many people offer bags of hosts to the Church during the offerings. There are so many that quite a few rectories and monasteries use stale unconsecrated hosts to actually make a bread pudding for desert. I’ve made it myself and it turned out pretty well.
