No it’s not. It’s philosophically proven that relativism is false. This very post of yours shows (yet again) that you’re a relativist. The whole “you’re entitled to your own opinion,” “different strokes for different folks,” “whatever floats your boat,” “diversity is what makes the world go round,” “wouldn’t it be boring if we all believed the same thing?” attitude is relativism incarnate!
I can see my request for a little respect went unheeded. Appreciate it.

From my view it looks like Smitty is respectfully disagreeing with you.

Another good quote form G.K. Chesterton:

“Idolatry is committed, not merely by setting up false gods, but also by setting up false devils; by making men afraid of war or alcohol, or economic law, when they should be afraid of spiritual corruption and cowardice.”

JSmitty2005:
Open-mindedness is a sign of foolishness and intellectual weakness. Contrary to popular belief and political correctness, being narrow-minded is exactly what the mind was designed for. The mind is used for thinking and thinking itself is a narrowing process whereby erroneous propositions are critiqued and eliminated. I swear that some people are so open-minded that their brains have fallen out!
Here’s some more Chesterton for ya:

“An open mind is really a mark of foolishness, like an open mouth. Mouths and minds were made to shut; they were made to open only in order to shut. The object of opening the mind, as of opening the mouth, is to shut it again on something solid.”

And finally, some Fulton Sheen:

“America, it is said, is suffering from intolerance. It is not. It is suffering from tolerance of right and wrong, truth and error, virtue and evil, Christ and chaos. Our country is not nearly so much overrun with the bigoted as it is overrun with the broadminded.”
Watch a bunch of baloney!! While I agree there are certain principles one should adhere too and not stray from, to say one should never be open-minded is plain silly. It depends on the issue. If everybody in the world were narrow-minded, compromise would never be possible on anything. Narrowmindedness (I made up a word), has been the cause of many a conflict throughout history.

Good thing Jesus wasn’t narrow minded when he agreed to associate with sinners. The narrow minded folks tried to keep him from it. You going to call Jesus, foolish and intellectually weak?

BTW, I don’t appreciate the insinuation that I’m foolish and intellectually weak. However, this last post of yours may qualify.

Now, we are way off thread here, so why don’t we cut out the “sniping”, and get back on topic.

I think this man needs to be canonized a saint!

Insinuating that I’m foolish and intellectually weak is respectful? I guess we disagree on the definition of respectful.

I was addressing open-mindedness of which you claim to be only “to a certain degree,” so I don’t see why this has offended you.

Certainly there is a respectful way to point out to someone they are those things you mentioned above. And, there also is a disrespectful and rude way to do it as well. I stand by my earlier observation.

One can discuss and debate without being disrepectful, rude, and insulting. You haven’t mastered that art yet. I disagreed with you on a number of points, but I don’t think I was rude to you. See the difference? If you don’t, then there is not much else I can say.

I find your last statement, foolish and intellectually weak. Would you consider that statement disrespectful to you? I would. If not, then you have a thicker skin than I.

BTW, I was using this as an example only. I mean’t no offense.

I never accused you of being rude, but nothing I said was any ruder (look, I made up a word too 😛 ) than what you’ve said. I don’t really see what I said that was disrespectful, rude, or insulting. If you took it that way, then maybe you need to examine your beliefs. After all, you didn’t rebut anything I said other than call me “rude” and it “baloney.” As for passing judgment on whether or not I’ve “mastered that art yet,” let me just say, well…that’s only your opinion. 😃

I don’t remember calling anyone’s statements foolish and intellectually weak (even though you did in post 64), but I did say:

“*Open-mindedness * is a sign of foolishness and intellectual weakness.”

My beliefs are just fine. I think I rebutted everything you said, you just don’t agree with it. I noticed your age, and I don’t mean to talk down to you, but it does explain a few things now.

Ditto to that! Just remember that guys like me are the future of the Church. 😉

Alright, now that that’s over with, here’s a reminder for everyone as to what this thread is about.

Having long wandered from it’s original topic, this thread is now closed.
