Hi, I am a sophomore in college and 19 years old. I don’t drink, I never have. But I’m wondering if it’s a sin for example to have just one glass of wine at a party. Without the intention of getting drunk, while keeping a clear head, and with your parents being ok with it. Any thoughts? Thank you!

In general, Christians are to follows the laws where they live unless they are unjust or contrary to God’s law. I believe there are some verses in Romans 13 about this but I’m not sure if that is prescriptive or just pertaining to the situations of that time.

Wow, 19 and you’re not legal to drink? Our drinking age is 16 - 19 depending.

If it’s against the law, don’t do it.

What did your parents say when you discussed it with them? Do they think it’s a sin?

Really, you should ask a priest, not us, because we can only give our opinions.

It’s 21 in the States. Although some states allow people under that age to consume alcohol in the presence of a parent.

You can star in a porn film when you are 18 but you can’t drink until you are 21… Only in America…😃 How come this “law” hasn’t been challenged yet?

It was in the late 70’s. The drinking age was 18. The number of accidents and alcohol related deaths went up, so states went back to 21.

Specifically, the federal gov tied a big chunk of highway funding to raising the drinking age. Personally, I think it’s time to revisit drug and alcohol laws.

Yep… fight and die for their country…buy property…vote in elections… but somehow too immature to have a glass of wine.
You can address the issue of drinking and driving directly without attempting to eliminate alcohol completely for the under 21 crowd.

The Feds should raise it to 24, in my opinion. Human brains aren’t mature until around that age. There’s far too much at risk to have people getting boozed up when they’re young.

As far as drinking in college–probably you ought to abide by the law and the college’s policies. The other kids need someone sober to help them stumble away from trouble. 😉

As long as the law allows it in your state (if you’re in the presence of your parents) I don’t see that it would be an issue.

I live in Canada, in a province where the drinking age is 18. (It’s 19 in some provinces.) My parents started allowing me to have one drink on special occasions when I was about 15 or 16. Once, when we were young children, Mom made unleavened bread for supper on Holy Thursday. She and Dad had wine, and we kids had grape juice, but they gave us each a little bit of wine in the bottom of a shot glass just to taste. They let us start drinking in moderation under supervision on special occasions because they wanted us to learn to drink responsibly.

That’s right - only in America. You can exchange bodily fluids with other people and fill your lungs with tar at age 18, but heaven forbid a drop of fermented plant juice should grace your lips.

I could only accept your reasoning if you’re consistent. Do you also believe that military service, buying property, marriage, voting, having credit cards, and general emancipation from parents should be raised to 24?
