Jesus is wiser than Solomon so how should Kings 3:12 be understood? A surface reading of this passage implies that no one is wiser than Solomon.

It could be a poetic way of saying that Solomon was very wise.

Or, if it is to be taken literally, it could mean that Solomon was the wisest of all human persons with respect to natural human wisdom.

Jesus Christ, on the other hand, is a divine person, who has divine wisdom, which is, of course, far superior to natural human wisdom.

The Haydock Bible Commentary
After thee. Solomon has given us some idea of his wisdom in the works which he has left. They were dictated by the Holy Spirit, who adorned his soul with so many graces, chap. iv. 29, 30. (Haydock) — His knowledge of nature, and of the art of governing, excelled that of any of the kings of Israel; (Lyranus, &c.; 2 Paralipomenon ix.) though Moses and the apostles had a more comprehensive knowledge of the mysteries of God. (Calmet) — Yet, even granting that no mere man might come up to him, Jesus Christ, in whom the treasures of wisdom were contained, was far superior. (Haydock) — General propositions are often to be understood with a limitation. (Menochius)

“General propositions are often to be understood with a limitation.”

Solomon was wisest within the time of the Old Testament.

Well understand it like this God who was before him was wiser and yet God said noone before or after would be as wise as solomon…so we should understand it by human standered (sorry for my spelling) 😃
