I will decline to pass judgment on the major points being made in the column and just comment on a side issue. First, unless I am wrong, the translation set out in the column is not the one that Catholics say at Mass. But perhaps the wording concerning the Incarnation should be what we say, because it is what we believe; whereas what we do say is not. “Became Incarnate” reflects the truth of the Conception of Jesus and does not have Jesus becoming Man only upon the event of His Birth.
Years ago, it was rumored that the wording about the Incarnation was to be changed. Perhaps it was only the Anglicans who saw fit to actually do so. Our bishops might want to follow their lead, so that what we profess to believe is what we do believe and so that the teachings of the Church with regard to abortion would have more gravitas.
