I am new to the faith and though I have formed a relationship with Jesus and The Father I dont yet understand who the Holy Spirit is or how to visualise Him.
Can you help?

I am unaware of the Holy Spirit ever appearing in a unique physical form. The Holy Spirit usually works without form like during the conception of Jesus when the Holy Spirit remains invisible while the angel appears, or enters an existing form as when Jesus is baptized (the dove). When I address this subject what I tell the students is the Holy Spirit is the “verb” form, the doer. The Holy Spirit resides inside the Church and it’s Laity (that is us) were intervenes on occasion to guide us.

How can you visualize a spirit?

The Holy Spirit has let His presence be known by fire, as in the Buring Bush to Moses or over the Disciples at Pentecost, or as brilliant light at the Transfiguration or to St. Seraphim of Sarov.

But that’s not the same thing.

The Holy Spirit is what gives us life…every breath, every heart beat…also, when you feel the wind blow…all of that is the Holy Spirit…just try to pay attention to your surroundings and realize how you are constantly in the presence of God

An excellent book on the Person of the Holy Spirit is The Sanctifier by Fr. Luis M Martinez. You also might be helped by reading Frank Sheed’s Theology for Beginners.

The Holy Spirit is love. Meditate on God’s Love for you.

It is my thought that the Holy Spirit shows forth Jesus. Thus He tends to be transparent. When we look to Him, He passes us through to Jesus.

Visualisation is unnecessary and sometimes unwise.

I think it was Frank Sheed who made the point pretty clearly, although I could only paraphrase so many years later. There is a difference between inconceivable and unimaginable. If you cannot conceive of something properly, your imagination may hijack your thinking, and you could actually wind up loving or worshiping a god of your own making.

THe Holy Spirit is depicted in various forms, the most common is a dove… or a tongue of fire, Nobody truly understands the Holy Spirit for the Holy Spirit is God
as in scripture when Jesus was baptised by his cousin John the Baptist , after his immersion in the water, Our Lord came out of the water and the Holy Spirit in the sign of a dove appeared over his head, and the Father (God) was heard saying this is my beloved, Son… do you remember the gospel reading?
When Catholics are confirmed, we are sealed, meaning a spiritual mark in the Holy Spirit, the Holy Spirit is our counselor , guide for our spiritual journey closer to God.
the gifts of the Holy Spirit are wisdom, understanding, counsel, might (meaning strength)
knowledge, piety, and reverence for God. You can find a more depth explanation in the Catechism of the Catholic Church With the basic gifts of the Holy Spirit more develop. the natural gifts and talents God has given to each indiidual for the building and edification of the whole church. meaning all believers of God then you discover the ministers –
those that use their gifts as healers such those in medical professions, prayer warriors, evangelists (preachers) discerners of spirits, (good, evil and human) teachers, administrators, etc etc. It’s all good! Everything coming from God!
Pray that God enlightens you to be open to all the gifts that the Holy Spirit wants to work through you, you will be amazed just how amazing God works .
