Another thing that I noticed is that if you take time off work to go back to school to get better skills to add to your set, it also seems that even though you went to school for a full year, when you go to apply for jobs, the company also seems to see that as being lazy or unproductive, even though it is writen right there on the resume that you were in school full time. I don’t see how being in school full time to get some better skills is seen as being needed to explain why you have a gap in unemployment.

As an employer… let me be candid:

People who are out of work can tend to take their joblessness to heart and become downcast - this shows up in the interview process.

That said, my advice: Practice interviewing with people you are comfortable with - interviewing is a skill and by increasing your aptitude, you could come across with a better ‘can-do’ attitude that if you didn’t practice.

I think what he means is that the discouragement one feels when out of work for an extended period can influence ones confidence and can come through in the interview in subconscious ways.

Again, you are generalizing. Some companies or managers? Sure.

All companies? All managers? No.

I have been unemployed 5 years and no idea why. I have a masters, valid work experience, Spanish skills and several computer certifications and still nothing. The sad thing is for about 2 years before I lost my job I was still looking for another job (I hated my job)and no success then. I want to go back to college to switch fields but not sure when or if that’s a good idea since teachers are long unemployed too and that’s what I want to do.

Try ESL(English as Second Language), that is what I’m looking at doing right now. The Department of Labor should help you get trained and certified in whatever state your in. Ask them about it. If you have to try teaching online and on your own.

I’ve been looking into that but will try the state labor department to see how I can get certified. I’ve also been checking into GED training as well because many schools offer that.

Well I’m poor so if I lost my job and McDonalds or Retail work is all I could get then I would work that. I have two jobs now one as a secretary and one as a recruiter at a call center. I’ve never understood people not taking what they could get after months without work. I’ve never been on the high end of the job market though.

The problem is that those who are educated will not be hired at those jobs. I applied for an overnight stocking job at Wal-Mart and they bluntly told me because I have a degree they wouldn’t be hiring me. Most of these jobs are afraid the educated person will try to steal their job or they wouldn’t work more than a month or so.

Another reason, (I might be wrong) is that this is an employers market, They want talent and stars, and some people will not shine in those jobs meaning that it will be a hard time for them and they will struggle. Think Micheal Jordan, when he was a basketball player was the greatest player ever, when he went to baseball, he was subpar. People do need to be where they shine, especially when companies want talent, and can pick and choose.
