Actually, and I’ve discussed this before, I believe the ultimate fulfillment of this verse, in addition to final impentinence of the individual human as suggested by JPII, is in a historical sense, i.e., at the very end of the world. For St. Augustine teaches that the Holy Spirit is the restrainer of iniquity, and at the end of the world, iniquity will no longer be able to be restrained because humanity will:
A. be in an **irrevocable **apostasy, but more importantly,
B. an ***unforgivable ***apostasy.
I mean, the modern apostasy is not fully damnable because Christians through their sin and division have given scandal. hence, the modern world lacks faith in part because of the scandal of division and hypocrisy, and so are not unforgivable nor irredeemable.
But when God sends the Minor Chastisement and the world almost comes to an end because of its sins, and God reunites all faiths to Rome and gives the world the best of both worlds: both spiritual AND materialistic prosperity for a great age, when they fall away AGAIN, at the very end, they will truly have no excuse. They will be calling the seven stages of redemption by the Holy Spirit a total lie, and by way of implication blaspheming the totality and *completion *of his redemptive action in human history, which will truly be unforgivable, or that is, IMHO.
