Unforgivable Sin?

At a school baseball game (It’s a Catholic School) while we were warming up, a teammate jokingly suggested that we pray over the other team. I laughed and said “Yeah, but they might not see that you’re praying; they might think you’re trying to curse them.” I did this pretty quickly, and didn’t really think about it. I then realized that it might have been considered Blasphemy of the Holy Spirit. Did I commit the Unforgivable Sin?

I can’t see why you’d think you’ve committed any sin at all, let alone unforgivable sin.

Try not to be so scrupulous. If in doubt, talk to your priest/confessor about this or any other sin you are concerned that you may have commited.

I do think I’ve been a bit scrupulous lately, I tend to do things impulsively, and then worry about whether or not they are mortal sin.

Have a talk with a trusted priest/confessor about this. It’s not spiritually healthy to be so scrupulous and to agonise over whether things you’ve done are mortal sins. Mortal sins are very serious sins that involve us deliberately turning our backs on God. They are not things done impulsively.

I thought that the only unforgivable sin was refusing to accept the Lord’s mercy and forgiveness.

No sin is intrinsically unforgivable. Some sins are called so because the sinner will not repent of them. Like final impenitence, or despairing of being saved, or being presumptuous about one’s salvation (thinking he doesn’t need to cooperate with the grace of God, that his salvation is already sure and settled independently of what he does). In other words, the unforgivable sins are those which the sinner does not recognize as sins at all, because if he did, he would be able to repent.

What you did doesn’t seem even to have been a sin at all. Why did you think it would be? Because you thought badly of the other team? It seems that, given the context, it would be reasonable for them to think that you were praying for your own victory and therefore for their loss.
