Is it an unforgivable sin if a person considers suicide but does not attempt it?

Lutherans would tell you nothing is unforgivable. Repent! Ask for forgiveness and do your best to sin no more. If you fail: Repent! And ask forgiveness again!

Catholics would say (almost) the same. As I remember, the only sin that can’t be forgiven is the sin you won’t let be forgiven

Many people have been down this road and stopped… because this small light in the back of there mind told them, What would this do to the people that actually love & care about you. I doubt it is a sin… but not asking for help could be…
If it is you that thinks about this issue please talk to me via private mail…

Thinking about suicide as in a fleeting thought is completely outside of your control and isn’t a sin at all. Thinking about suicide as in planning one out and taking measures toward that end in another story. However, there is no sin that can’t be forgiven if you repent. Suicide is spoken of as an “unforgiveable sin” not because its nature is any more evil or severe than other sins, but because if a person is successful in killing themselves, it is assumed that they haven’t had time to repent for it. Obviously, if a person does have time to repent (either they are unsuccessful or they don’t die immediately) then they can be forgiven as well. There is also a strong argument that suicide is generally a symptom of profound suffering with mental illness and therefore the culpability of the victim could possibly be diminished because they aren’t in their right mind and therefore aren’t able to act of their own free will.

Hi, I just want to know, why Jesus said: But whoever speaks against the Holy Spirit, it will not be forgiven him, either in this age (Matthew 12:32). But why there are no sins that can be unforgiven? Thank you

This is what the Divine Mercy is all about:** there are no unforgiveable sins**. (Except as Allegra has explained) Peter was forgiven. Even Judas would have been forgiven if he had believed in God’s love and mercy. Remember what Jesus said to St. Faustina:

“Were a soul like a decaying corpse, so that from a human standpoint, there would be no hope of restoration and everything would already be lost, it is not so with God. The miracle of Divine Mercy restores that soul in full. In the Tribunal of Mercy [the sacrament of Reconciliation]…the greatest miracles take place and are incessantly repeated."
(1448) "Here the misery of the soul meets the God of mercy.”

According to the CCC, not even a suicide attempt which results in death can be completely considered an unforgivable sin. Yes, suicide is a horrible thing and nobody should ever make such a terrible choice, but Church teaching is that not even one who does can automatically said to be damned:

On the topic of suicide, the CCC has this to say
2280 Everyone is responsible for his life before God who has given it to him. It is God who remains the sovereign Master of life. We are obliged to accept life gratefully and preserve it for his honor and the salvation of our souls. We are stewards, not owners, of the life God has entrusted to us. It is not ours to dispose of.
2281 Suicide contradicts the natural inclination of the human being to preserve and perpetuate his life. It is gravely contrary to the just love of self. It likewise offends love of neighbor because it unjustly breaks the ties of solidarity with family, nation, and other human societies to which we continue to have obligations. Suicide is contrary to love for the living God.
2282 If suicide is committed with the intention of setting an example, especially to the young, it also takes on the gravity of scandal. Voluntary co-operation in suicide is contrary to the moral law.
**Grave psychological disturbances, anguish, or grave fear of hardship, suffering, or torture can diminish the responsibility of the one committing suicide.
2283 We should not despair of the eternal salvation of persons who have taken their own lives. By ways known to him alone, God can provide the opportunity for salutary repentance. The Church prays for persons who have taken their own lives. **
As you can clearly see, in 2280-2281, suicide is a horrible thing that goes against human nature and and is also against the moral law, especially if its meant to be an example. However, as we can clearly see in 2282b and 2283, there are many factors involved which can diminish the responsibility of the person involved and that God can and does provide for the opportunity for repentance.

Awesome question! The Lutheran understanding is that if you’re aware of the Holy Spirit than it would be impossible to completely speak against Him. Once known, there is always a part of that welcomes the Grace of Him even though we can struggle against God’s love for us. Conversely, without being aware of the Holy Spirit, it would be be impossible to sin in this way in against Him as well.

As I understand it, blasphemy against the Holy Ghost is the unforgivable sin because if you refuse to let him work in you, then you will not be able to seek repentance for any other sins. He’s sort of a prerequisite to repentance and forgiveness for everything else.

Yes.

Don’t worry, I’m not suicidal. Where the question comes from is a long story and I don’t think I can really go into it but thank you to everybody for your responses.
