No it is still a sin. It is murder and murder is a violation of the natural law so one does not have the defense of ignorance of church teaching. I doubt if excommunication would apply to someone who is not in the Church when the abortion was committed. It would have to be confessed an may need to forgiven by a bishop rather than a priest. But I don’t really know if that is the case as I have never had any experience with a similar situation.Also, from what I have understood and read, don’t you have to be AWARE it is a grave sin, proceed with this knowlege in defiance of the Church and MUST BE completely aware of automatic excomunication, as a result?
In other words, even if you did it in defiance of Church teaching if you did NOT know about automatic excomunication, you cannot be excomunicated and are not considered such.
Considering she (OP) didn’t appear to know about Church teaching at the time she had the abortion, that seems to remove the question of it being a grave sin.
