General Conference of the United Methodist Church votes overwhelming to withdraw from Religious Coalition for Reproductive Choice

An incredible turn of events. Yesterday, on a vote of 425 to 268 (61% to 39%), delegates to the quadrennial General Conference meeting of the United Methodist Church voted that two United Methodist entities withdraw immediately from membership in the Religious Coalition for Reproductive Choice (RCRC).

The two coalition members of RCRC are the General Board on Church and Society (GBCS) and United Methodist Women (UMW).

As the Rev. Paul Stallsworth has written for NRL News Today, RCRC “is dedicated to keeping abortion–all abortions, of all unborn children, for any reason or no reason–legal in American society. In other words, RCRC never, ever speaks or lobbies or writes against abortion.”

“There is nothing moderate or nuanced about RCRC, which has consistently lobbied to defend grisly ‘partial-birth’ abortions, even after our Social Principles included a statement ‘call[ing] for the end of this late-term practice,’” said John Lomperis, a delegate to the General Conference and United Methodist director at the Institute on Religion and Democracy. “In contrast to the United Methodist Church, RCRC dismisses the value of unborn human life. RCRC even promotes rituals to bless all the work of elective abortion clinics, describing aborting unborn children as always ‘holy work.’”

RCRC is blatantly pagan/wiccan/Satanist, for whom abortion is ‘pure child human sacrifice.’

Blessings,

This could be interesting, as Hillary Clinton is (at least nominally) a United Methodist. The timing of this withdrawal leads to some obvious questions… 🙂

Good for the United Methodists! I think John Wesley must be applauding now. 😉

Good point! I had forgotten about HRC being a Methodist. Will she withdraw her membership I wonder? I just recently found out a good friend of mine and her husband who vote democrat have joined a Methodist church. This makes me wonder if they will be looking for another new church. They used to belong to United Church of Christ and left because of their pastor many years ago.

Good news. I think there had definitely been something of a backlash against the abortion lobby in the last couple of years and I hope the trend continues.

Or will they criticize her in a position paper or sermon? On the one hand, I doubt devout Protestants are going to be voting for her; on the other, she’s already facing her fair share of controversy, and things like this could easily give an edge to Donald Trump. 🙂

This isn’t an “incredible turn of events” at all. It’s an effort that has been stalled for several GCs now.

I think that since the progressives got a reprieve on homosexuality, they were in no position to fight on this. More or less what I’ve been hoping for.

I consider this a victory for the good guys! This is great news and needs to be spread far and wide.

let’s hope others will follow this.

Since I was raised in the United Methodist Church, the community is still very important to me. This makes me so happy. Especially because certain members of the denomination are fighting to make gay marriage acceptable in the church. It is good to see that they are still fighting for some true Christian values!

I remember protesting the (now closed) Planned Parenthood in Augusta with a group of UMC. 👍👍👍
