United Way Sent $1.8 Million to Planned Parenthood in 2008

I’ve heard this before. I get confused because my work allows donations to United Way out of our paycheck. The list of charities it supports never includes Planned Parenthood, but it does include Catholic Charities. I guess it’s a local chapter though. I’ll go ahead and donate to the good charities directly.
 
One has to be so careful who they donate to these days.

Organizations like United Way and Susan G. Komen are required to file IRS form 990 which lists all their charitable giving. These are usually posted at the organization’s website.

The 2010 form for United Way is at unway.3cdn.net/8439794c5b10276c0b_8lm6bdyqo.pdf. Look for the section titled “Grants and Assistance to Orgs.” This is just for United Way Worldwide and will not include anything donated by local United Way chapters. You have to contact your local chapter directly of see if they have a 990 posted on their website.

Often the name of the charitable organization is not given. Sometimes a block grant is given to an umbrella organization which then handles distribution of funds. This sometimes makes money very difficult to track.

But it is interesting to look at an organization’s 990 and google some of the ogranizations they donate to. You can often get a feel for the organization’s mindset by looking at the types of organizations they support.

Millions of people have been duped by United Way and Unicef. There are many more groups that are not what they seem.

For example, the Susan Khomen society donates to planned parenthood and at the same time pretends to fight breast cancer. Contraception and abortion are tightly linked to breast cancer. When will everyone wake up!
 
I investigated my local United Way chapter to see if they gave to PP. Planned Parenthood was not listed, but I investigated further. I found many donations to local charities that refer women to family planning services that include abortion. It is a tangled web. I would stay away from donating to the United way. I was unaware that the United Way gave money to PP on a national level. I will start writing my $0 larger on the United Way form at work!
On a side note, for 2009, Brian A. Gallagher President, CEO United Way Worldwide was paid $494,582.

My local United way paid a local employee over $370,000!
