Apologies for my vagueness on this question. I have often heard on Catholic Radio a speaking talk about uniting one’s suffering with Christ’s, and that this in someway is salvific.

I have two connected questions:
  1. What is the scriptural basis for this ?
  2. How do you actually do it ?
Many thanks for any help that anyone can give me.

God Bless,

Hal.

PS: I am a Mormon converting to Catholicism, and this is a wholly new concept to me.

Romans 8:16 For the Spirit himself giveth testimony to our spirit, that we are the sons of God. 17 And if sons, heirs also; heirs indeed of God, and joint heirs with Christ: yet so,** if we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified with him.**

Here’s another good one:
Now I rejoice in my sufferings for your sake, and in my flesh I am filling up what is lacking in the afflictions of Christ on behalf of his body, which is the church.
Colossians 1:24
Welcome home Hal :tiphat:

2 Timothy 2:12 If we suffer, we shall also reign with him. If we deny him, he will also deny us.

Matthew 16:24 Then Jesus said to his disciples: If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.

Here is an article on redemptive suffering.

You can unite any type of bitterness of soul, sickness, pain, etc. with Our Lord (and your joys and happiness as well). I kind of think of it as a way of praying. Personally, when I offer something up, I offer Our Lord a Hail Mary and tell Him my suffering. I then tell Him what I am offering it for and give a little prayer of Thanksgiving to Him for allowing me this suffering. This is my own personal offering, but I can imagine Our Lord would be pleased in how you determine to offer your sufferings from your heart.

Deo gratias you are becoming a Catholic!! Welcome to the Holy Faith. Will you be attending the Tridentine Mass?

Many thanks. I sure hope so. I studied Latin at school. It was a beautiful and powerful language.

i think of HIm as my friend. When I am lonely and feel abandonded an deserted I remember Him throughout HIs passion, and he was abandoned and lonely too - OUr Lord was fully human and fully divine and He understands all of your suffering, from your pain (cross) and loneliness (Garden, path to Golgotha) to your temptations (mountain). Jesus is your Friend and your Lord. All of it. Don’t doubt your own heart.

Here is another Scriptural support:

1 Corinthians 10:16
Is not the cup of blessing which we bless a sharing in the blood of Christ? Is not the bread which we break a sharing in the body of Christ?

The Eucharist isn’t the only time we share in His suffering and death. Catholics believe in offering up our hardships at any time. We can unite our suffering in union with the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass throughout the world. There is always a Mass going on somewhere. There is a type of spiritual communion anytime you offer your prayers, works, joys, and sufferings in union with His on the cross. You can also offer up your hardships and suffering for a special intention, such as the salvation of family, friends, and souls in purgatory. Make up your own prayer or use one such as this:

Daily Offering
O Jesus, through the Immaculate Heart of Mary, I offer you my prayers, works, joys, and sufferings of this day, in union with the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass throughout the world. I offer them for all the intentions of your Sacred Heart: the salvation of souls, reparation for sin, and the reunion of all Christians. I offer them for the intentions of our Bishops and all Apostles of Prayer, and in particular, for those recommended by our Holy Father this month. AMEN.

Welcome to the Catholic faith. 👍
