Unitive "foreplay only" a grave matter?

bugz2007, nothing in that document contradicted what I had been saying, which is why I didn’t just bulk copy/paste it into here - opting, instead, to select the portions relevant to the discussion. No problem with relevance! 😉

A little teasing can go a long way, we’ve found.
Def gets us ‘in the mood’ and ‘geared up’ for later.

Reminds us both that we desire each other, love
one another, and just plain enjoy being together
in that way. It’s fun.

If DH didn’t touch or tease me anytime but when
he actually wanted the ‘full deal’, I’d feel used,
and not very desired.

“I want you, but only when I can have it all, otherwise,
forget it.”

Nope, no thank you. I’ll take the playful teasing,
petting and kissing that keeps us both humming
for one another, all day long.

By the way, this teasing never leads to orgasm
for either, just warms us up, so to speak, for later.

(hope this wasn’t TMI)

The parts that you did not quote are relevant in that they refer to the concept of intent, which is what many of those involved in this discussion are focusing on.

Many are allowing that “foreplay only” may not be intrinsically wrong, but they are also arguing that it is very situational. What may be “too much” for one couple may not be “too much” for another couple. And what one couple would consider foreplay (called foreplay because it is in preparation for sexplay itself) would not be considered foreplay necessarily by another couple. The parts of the document that were not involved in your quoting do remind us to be careful, so while you may use that document as the Church giving the OK for foreplay only, it isn’t a universal thing.

How about we actually quote the guidelines from that document in their entirety, instead of choosing the parts that support our arguments?
To my reading of this document it is saying it is not wrong to engage in foreplay but a couple should only so if the intention thereafter is complete the marital act by intercourse and orgasm inside the wife.

To others - I apologize in advance for the graphic nature of the essay nobeerinheaven linked, which I am now quoting from.

Hi nobeerinheaven,

Although our statements may have been a little bit too restrictive with regards to sexual pleasure, I think the document supports bilop and I more than it does you. This is especially the case in your incorrect statements regarding fellatio and coitus interuptus:
  1. The spouses should not engage in those activities which normally lead to complete carnal arousal and completed relations. Thus it is hard to justify one spouse repeatedly caressing the clitoris or penis of the other outside of immediate foreplay for marital intercourse. This is why fellatio and cunnilingus should only be used as foreplay for normal intercourse.
  2. The caress and kissing of each other’s breasts and chest depends on its effects. For some couples this would be overpowering and should be limited to immediate foreplay; other couples apparently can do this without being excessively aroused. The type and duration of kissing can also have varying effects. Some couples can handle open-mouthed kissing for some time; others find it excessively arousing and best suited as part of immediate foreplay.
Compare this with your most recent statement:
40.png
nobeerinheaven:
Some acts of foreplay count as lust, if they are done purely for sexual pleasure, but other acts of foreplay are permitted even when the couple does not intend to engage in sex afterwards. Notice that this can also include genital stimulation - that is morally permissible, according to the Church - even if no sex is intended.
Completely the opposite. As the document states, there is such a thing as being “excessively aroused” and some actions should be withheld for “immediate foreplay.” It isn’t just about orgasm, as you keep incorrectly stating.

Also, in regards to this comment:
40.png
nobeerinheaven:
No, that puritanical position is not endorsed by any official Chuch document - even if the pleasure you derive is sexual pleasure.
Compare that to this from the document you linked:
I might also add that I’ve been told by some people that they’ve done it both ways-pushing the limits on the one hand and having no more than a hug and a kiss in the kitchen on the other, and they have found the latter better for their overall marital relationship. Others may find that they can handle some holding and kissing on the couch but not in their bed.
You are accusing people the author mentions who have found that “no more than a hug and a kiss in the kitchen…is better for their overall marital relationship” [why would that be? Hmm…perhaps because more cuddling is too sexually arousing??] as being puritanical. This isn’t true.

I think you misinterpreted some of this document. What it says clearly is that some sexual arousal is okay, but not too much. So, there is no clear line…as I have already claimed more than once.

Concur completely. Intent is critical, as it always is in Catholic moral theology. If the intent is closeness/romance and some arousal occurs, it’s probably OK, as long as the couple can control it. If the intent is to derive as much sexual pleasure as possible w/o orgasm, it is probably sinful.

God Bless

It’s beginning to look like the only morally safe course is for one of us to move onto the sofa – at least until Winter and the Dreaded Flannel Nightie comes out…talk about grave matter…

I suppose that could possibly be necessarily if a couple felt they would be unable to keep themselves from abusing the gifts of their bodies…not to say you are unable, but it seems you fear that you are if you think you need to sleep separately in order to keep from “going overboard.”

I hope you are joking 🙂

IIRC correctly you were talking about cuddling/kissing etc. w/ the missus. No one has said there is anything wrong with that, under any circumstances.

The debate has revolved around sexual acts (i.e. genital stimulation) w/o any intent of intercourse.

That a whole different kettle of fish.

God Bless

I was trying to add a little bit of levity to what has been – in several senses of the words - a “hot & heavy” thread. It was a joke. Lighten up.

As noted, it was a perhaps poor try at lightening-up. That said, IIRC, there was a whiff of a thought earlier in the thread that if a couple found “just cuddling” to be arousing, then “mere” cuddling could be as morally questionable as direct genital stimulation w/o the intent of intercourse. All of which strikes me as veering into what I think of as “Talmudic Catholicism,” which does seem to break out periodically on these boards.

Good point. Some people want too much specificity, and in trying to answer, other posters can get tied up in knots that lead to poor reasoning.

I recognized the joke, but in all seriousness, it’s possible for a couple to actually have that issue. I was more expressing distress on account of the couples who really do/would struggle.

Thank you for so kindly telling me to lighten up, though. 😛

EXCELLENT POST! (yelling to get over the ‘noise’)

Hardly. The both of you have been claiming that no sexually stimulating activity is morally permissible unless sex is planned on - the only thing that is morally permissible, you two have been arguing, is non-sexual activity like hugging and cuddling. That is an extreme position not supported by anything in the Catechism (unless one misreads it) or anything else the Church has officially declared.

It is not the opposite: I say genital stimulation is permissible, this document advises, for prudential reasons, against “repeated” genital stimulation - contextually, because such stimulation may be overboard for many couples and lead to strong temptations to sin. The document repeatedly emphasizes the capacities for couples to draw the line at what is “over-stimulation”, though, so if a couple is capable of engaging in these activities without any temptation to sin, then there is nothing in the document which forbids their acting on that inclination. Different couples have different limits on how much sexuality will lead them to temptation. Some couples may be able to get to third base without temptation, some couples may not even be able to go up to bat. Prudence is encouraged, though, so couples should not push the envelope and test their limits - still, no grave matter exists in “foreplay only” which is what this thread was designed to unearth.

I’m not accusing *couples *of being puritanical for wanting no more than non-sexual activity when no sex is planned - I’m calling a spade a spade when I say that it is puritanical to condemn as immoral sexual activity whenever no sex is planned afterwards. Couples can do what they want, but when people start to say that the Church condemns “foreplay only” (as you and others have argued, based on a misreading of the Catechism) then that ventures into a puritanical attitude about sex unsupported by clear Church teaching.

You have claimed that there is no clear line between cuddling and sexuality, but once one has clearly ventured into sexuality then it is wrong (unless sex is planned). You have gone one step further than this and claimed that engaging in any activity which one knows to be sexually stimulating, without planning any sex afterwards, is grave matter (here). *Not only is it not grave matter, it is not a matter of sin at all. *

This is a very different claim from what the document makes: there is no clear line of sexual behavior that is wrong as “foreplay only.” It is up to the couples to decide what is overly stimulating, and not to go beyond that. You have said it is up to couples to decide what is sexually stimulating at all, and avoid that. These are very different claims about there being “no clear line.”

nobeerinheaven,

I think we are pretty much done. I already said that I was probably a little too restrictive when it comes to my sexual pleasure comments, but now you want to beat me over the head with my earlier comments. Meanwhile, you won’t admit you were dead wrong about fellatio and coitus interruptus without orgasm. The document *you *provided refutes your own comments in this regards.

Since you ignored your error and/or don’t like to admit when you are wrong, here is the quote from the article again - "This is why fellatio and cunnilingus should only be used as foreplay for normal intercourse."

I have not condemned every activity that brings sexual pleasure, rather I have talked about intent. That doesn’t seem to stop you from misrepresenting my statements. What I had said is that cuddling and light caressing are licit, unless you start to get sexually aroused. So, in light of this article, I agree some couples can go a little bit past cuddling, as long as their actions don’t get them too aroused. To me, that basically means you are getting some sexual pleasure, but not for the purpose of sexual arousal. The article gives good guidelines about trying to avoid being “excessively aroused.” So, I still maintain that my approach is correct.

However, I have come to the conclusion that both of us have said what we believe, and I leave it to other couples to do the research, talk to their priest, etc. rather than to take either of our statements as “gospel.”

Stay-at-Home Catholic Dad of 3… is me! (and proud to be)

I agree here as well. My wife and I will play like this all the time.
It is called being affectionate. I’ve also been married for 19 years and maybe that is why… cause she knows that I still desire to be married to her, to be with her, to be her best friend, and that I am in LOVE WITH HER!!! I think some guys should try paying a little more attention to their wives and children and less on themselves and I think the divorce rate would drop!!

Hi Paul,

I think most everyone agrees with that! Btw…regarding TC2’s comments:

I agree fully with that sentiment, but I don’t think anyone is advocating having such an attitude with your spouse. If they do, quite frankly, even their conjugal act is probably not fully in accord with Church teaching. If a spouse uses the other primarily for their sexual fulfillment, then they are not participating in a “mutual self-giving” as the Catechism describes.

I have no idea what TC2’s “teasing” constitutes, nor do I need to know :o ; but, based on the post and my assumptions about the strength of human desires, my guess is that they are not “pushing the limits” as the earlier linked article warns against, which is why such teasing “never leads to orgasm.” As I have posted, intent is most important. If you can avoid becoming “excessively aroused” and having your “playful teasing” turn into actions that should be used only as foreplay for intercourse, then you are doing just fine.
