I see this phrase all the time, particularly from Orthodox posters. I don’t understand what it means. For example (forgive me for borrowing your post, Andrew):
Harpazo:
It’s never going to happen. Ever. In my mind, this how it plays out practically (assuming each is on their best behavior):
The Pope: Hello, Your Holiness.
Russian Patriarch: Hello, Your Holiness.
Pope: So, we need to heal this schism.
Patriarch: Indeed, but this can only be done with a real understanding of each other’s faith.
Pope: Okay. I understand your faith.
Patriarch: And, I yours.
Pope: …
Patriarch: …
Pope: So, do you agree?
Patriarch: Nope. Do you?
Pope: No…
Patriarch: There. We really understand each other.
Pope: Right.
Pope: …
Patriarch: …
Pope: …
Patriarch: …
Pope: …
Patriarch: …
Pope: Wanna play World of Warcraft?
Patriarch: Okay.
I’m not trying to be flippant, but really. I keep hearing these phrases over and over and they sound like they no substance to them, so educate me.
What does this mean? A ‘unity of true faith’? A ‘real understanding of each other’?Many Orthodox beleive that unity will come with Rome once they bring their children back to the fold. I don’t necessarily disagree with that. I do pray for union every day. Not a union based on a desire of unity, but a true unity of faith.
