"DAYTON, Ohio (AP) – A Catholic university in western Ohio says it will continue to offer employee health insurance that covers contraceptive care and isn’t changing the plan because of the fight over a new federal policy on birth control.

… Spokeswoman Teri Rizvi tells the Dayton Daily News the coverage at the Marianist school has been in place for two decades and that it chose its plans with workers’ health in mind.

… ."

Who would have guessed this? Not I.

I think the Catholic status of that university should be looked at by the Bishops in Ohio.

The issue is not whether an organization offers coverage on its own, but rather the issue is whether the federal government has the right to require the organization provide coverage, either directly or indirectly, it finds morally objectionable. The opponents need to understand the Church can teach what is right, but can’t compel right action. The example of individuals and organizations not living up to the Churches teaching does not invalidate those teachings. It proves, rather, that we are weak and flawed human beings.

In this case the local ordinary has to make a call because if this aint Catholic like behavior then they should not advertise themselves as a Catholic institution. The school itself is a Marian institution but the local ordinary I think can make the call on who does or doesn’t get a Catholic branding. 🤷

If you think this wasn’t known by those in charge, think again. It’s been in place for 20 years.
Bishops aren’t omnipotent. And the current archbishop hasn’t been there but a few years. It wouldn’t necessarily be the first thing I would think to ask an institution.

People can certainly feel free to bring it to Archbishop Schnurr’s attention, although I would recommend against articulating one’s concerns as a screed calling for him to denounce the University and strip it of it’s Catholic branding. And it would probably mean more coming from people who actually live in that archdiocese.

Do remember that the Bishop of the diocese where Notre Dame is located, did not attend the graduation ceremony when Obama was invited. What more could he have done to make his point? Maybe he did do more afterwards. Notre Dame did suddenly get very interested in doing Catholic things a few years later, and when they settled the Notre Dame 88 scandal.

So maybe this Bishop might start doing something too. It isn’t’ fair to the parents or students to have a college call itself Catholic, if it’s really not. It makes you wonder about what else they’re doing, because you know it doesn’t stop there.

There are plenty of Catholic schools that cover birth control as well. It’s not just this one. Many dioceses do also. It’s pretty sad.
