Universae Ecclesiae This new document speaks of the importance of having priests who are trained in the Latin Language. Certainly the job of educating priests is difficult, since many are already overburdened and terribly busy. It does not help that we begin losing the ability to master languages as we get older. Nevertheless, it is important for the priest to be able to pronounce (for his own sanity and for the sake of the faithful) the Latin as well as understand it at least fundamentally. There are certainly rich benefits from the praying of the Divinum Officium in its older form and language (High Latin Verse!). What a great way to get people interested in poetry again!

I am interested in hearing if you Catholic Homeschooling Parents are increasingly interested in educating your children in Latin in light of this clarification of the Motu Proprio. I know that different homeschooling programs, such as Seton, are making Latin available. It seems to me that we adults have the obligation to start helping out in this endeavor of reclaiming the Latin language and helping the religious of tomorrow to have a mastery over the language. It is frustrating for seminarians/college students to reach the level of their higher education and have no foundation whatsoever for the language. Any plans in light of this clarification?

I’m a Latin major going for his teaching degree. This announcement, even though I go to the Ordinary Form, is good news to me. Anything (moral) that brings Latin back, I think I can get behind. My fiancee and I have, unfortunately, had some falling out and our relationship is rocky right now, but we agreed a while ago that, if everything works out between us, our children will be educated in Latin at an early age, regardless of the school style they attend, on the condition that she teaches me Japanese.

If it doesn’t work out, well, I’m still going to have my teaching license in Latin, and before that, the associate dean for the Honors College at my university said that my idea to translate the Gospels (or a Gospel, I’m leaning towards John, as the papers are generally no more than 40 pages, and the Gospels together are, what, some 100 to 200 pages depending on the format?) of the Nova Vulgata into English for my Senior Honor’s Project was an excellent idea, so long as I include extensive translation notes.

Just a question. Why the Nova Vulgata?

The NV hasn’t been translated into English yet, which means that, from an academic standpoint (my university is a secular, public school), my skills with Latin will be far clearer as I have no other translation from which to draw.

On a less professional note, it is also the official Bible of the Catholic Church.

Ordinaries are asked to action their clergy the achievability of accepting able alertness for celebrations in the forma extraordinaria. This applies aswell to Seminaries, area approaching priests should be accustomed able formation, including abstraction of Latin and, area pastoral needs advance it, the befalling to apprentice the forma extraordinaria of the Roman Rite.
