I am trying to add to the thread about Universalis.com site but the poll it was based around has closed now, so it won’t let me add to the thread. I went and took a look at the site. As far as I can see it’s not Anglican/Episcopal at all. What it is is English Roman Catholic – Roman Catholic, but based in England.

All I know for sure about the site is that it does not use the text from The Liturgy of the Hours I have here is the USA. I used that site before I bought Shorter Christian Prayer and was disappointed that the text ws not the same. Not just translation, but different psalms and readings. I have my doubts whether it is English Roman Catholic. I’ve been told that there is something called Anglican-Catholic. Maybe that’s what Universalis uses.

Hi Buzz,
I followed the previous thread and was puzzled also. In the past I used to download Universalis onto my PDA thru AvantGo. 🤓 I have travelled to the UK with my PDA and found that the readings matched the (Catholic) masses there. I think some of the confusion is that the UK Catholic church uses a different translation of the scriptures than the US. This might lead a cursory examiner to conclude that the sight is Anglican, since the readings don’t line up with the US Catholic translations.

Another hit that the site has taken is that it doesn’t have all the readings and hours. The author has some web pages addressing this. Basicly, he has not had time to complete the job.

The author notes this and says that religious should only use the web site with the permission of their superiors. Doesn’t sound cavalier to me.

Ironically, since this thread erupted, I have stopped using Universalis, but I can't afford to buy the books. So the net effect for me might be to lose a valuable prayer resource.

Why hasn't anyone simply asked the author what his affiliations are?

It has a settings page where you can state whether you want U.S. or UK settings.

universalis.com/location.htm

Also there is an FAQ page that explains about the different translations and missing antiphons etc.:

universalis.com/faq.htm
This is true to an extent. It uses a different translation of the Bible for the readings (Jerusalem Bible), which to me isn’t a big deal, but it still shortens the psalms and canticles and is still missing things from the Hours. This is after changing to the US settings. It’s a fine site to use for prayer, but not an official one. The clergy who have to pray the Hours would need to get permission (as the site says).

Greetings All,
I sent an email to the Universalis site asking about their affiliation. Here’s what I got back this morning:
Thank you for your email and the kind words.
Yes, definitely Catholic. Everything is based on the Liturgy of the Hours as published by the Libreria Editrice Vaticana.
universalis.com/aboutus.htm tells you a little more about us.

Greetings,
Your web site has been a great blessing; thanks for your hard work. Is this site Catholic, AngloCatholic, Anglican, or something else? By this I mean, is your version of the Liturgy of the Hours in accord with the Catholic LoH or something else?

That’s what I like – someone who takes the initiative and gets things done! After yesterday’s inspiring discussions about page flipping (see other thread) I actually did MP this morning. Then I went to Universalis.com to see how it compares. It’s true there are bits missing and it’s a different translation, as the site does explain in the FAQ. Still, I think it’s pretty good considering it’s all the work of just one guy. And it’s free.

Hello FriarPark,
I agree with your post, but I think the site is extremely useful for busy lay people who want to get started with the Liturgy of the Hours but can’t do it all and can’t convince their spouses that the three books are a good investment 🙂 The clergy have different requirements.
Now please excuse me while I work on getting my PDA conduits restored so that I can get Universalis back on my PDA :nerd:

I don’t have the books to compare too, and now that the Liturgy of the Hours Apostolate charges {rightfully} for their downloadable booklets… I usually just use the Morning and Evening Prayers that are played from EWTN’s site.

I did a comparision between EWTN and Universalis… the reading were the same, other than the Bible Translation, if it’s true that the Hymn’s and additional Bible readings in the LotH are really optional…then the “normal” parts were EXACTLY the same as EWTN’s Morning Prayer.

Don’t know if this helps…but it did give me some confidance that I would be at least praying the correct readings and prayers for the LotH if I used that site.

Since I am currently trying to decide if I should join the Dominican Laiety…and they pray the LotH whenever possible… I like to be able to have such a resource avaiable to me.

Cheers!
Eric
