I was wondering if anybody went to the University of Scranton. I know it is a Jesuit university, but is it loyal to Catholic teaching? Also I was wondering how much tuition is. Thanks.

The University of Scranton, or “Da U” as its known here in Scranton, in my opinion is a liberal institution. Its president, Fr. Scott Pilarz, was brought here from Georgetown. The school even hosts the area’s only Muslim mosque. They have gay organizations on campus and have invited pro-abortion keynote speakers to their commencements. Liberal commentator Chris Matthews, from MSNBC’s “Hardball” was the speaker a few years ago, and the Bishop of the Diocese of Scranton boycotted the graduation ceremonies because of Matthews’ pro-abortion views. Despite protests from the Diocese, “Da U” proceeded to have Matthews speak anyways.

For a good Catholic college in Northeastern Pennsylvania, I would look into King’s College in Wilkes-Barre (15 miles south of Scranton). It is run by the Holy Cross Fathers of the University of Notre Dame.

Most school websites list tuition. Also, if you hunt around the website enough you can find clues as to their positions on Catholic issues. Sometimes school newspapers and various newsletters are on line. Who spoke at commencement? I’d start there. —KCT

This should be all you need to know:

Not exactly indicative a university that cares about being loyal to the Church:
*“When the university invited Chris Matthews, we acknowledged his efforts on public dialogue and his model of public debate. We want to inform the public so they can make responsible decisions,” said Gerry Zaboski, university spokesman. "He typically presents opposing views on issues and I’m sure you could find someone who disagrees with him on the same issue for the exact opposite reason.

“We’ve made the decision we’re making and we respect the right to disagree with it.”*

Thanks for the information. The bit about Matthews is very disappointing. It is too bad that the college gave the students the example of not only inviting a pro-abortion speaker but also the example of disobeying the bishop. Yes, this sounds like another liberal, not very Catholic “Catholic” college…😦

I will look into King’s College. Again, thanks for the info!🙂

Thanks, I found the tuition and it seems kind of expensive. While the website states that they are a college in the Jesuit tradition, it seems like they’re pretty liberal and I don’t think St. Ignatius of Loyola would be very happy.

Thanks for the quote. It does indeed sound like they don’t care much for being loyal to the Church. Catholic colleges should be presenting forcefully the teachings of the Church, not giving people the opportunity to call them into doubt.
Sadly, you just answered your own question. 😦
You probably have a point:(

Let’s say a prayer to St. Ignatius.
