Immigration is an emotional topic. Some people, especially blue collar workers, feel threatened by foreigners. Xenophobia causes great suffering for new arrivals.

The present immigration law provides for only 5,000 visas a year for unskilled workers. Yet the need of our economy is for more than 30 times that number.

We waste money in a futile attempt to keep needed workers out and force job seekers to risk their lives to satisfy the labor market. These people are not criminals. They are willing to do the unpleasant, dangerous and low paying jobs to support themselves and their families. They produce goods and services, and they are cash customers.

It is irrational to restrict the size of the economic pie. The Bush administration is correct in legislating to provide a visitor worker program that meets business needs.

Furthermore, social mobility requires new entrants at the bottom rung so those now at the bottom can move up the social-economic ladder
