Dear Friends,

Can you help me get over the fact that I believe I was unjustly laid off? In other words, the Dean (who has been fired and will leave here 6/30/09) who made this decision did not make it based on who works the hardest, contributes the most and so forth. Rather, the Dean took the easy way out. I am a white person in an HBCU and this particular Dean shows favoritism to the people who are black. Even the black people who sit and do little to nothing all day still have their jobs.

Meanwhile, the faculty and my direct boss, the Associate Dean, know how much harder I work in the Dean’s office than the other employees there. The black women in this office have never been nice to me, choosing to yell glad hellos to one another in the morning while not even speaking to me. I believe this situation exists because of gossip that was spread about me and because of jealousy towards me. I have been nice to all of these people no matter how ugly they treat me. It really bites when they tell me all the time what big Christians they are and how much holier they are than me when I treat them nice and they return evil for good.

Then it hurts to be the one the Dean sides against when I have knocked myself out for him.

My immediate boss says since I have 90 days to wait because he will be taking over as Interim Dean on 6/30/2009 and I believe he wants to fight for me because he knows I do the jobs of some of those who are still here and that I work extremely hard on any assignment given me.

The fault I have played in this is that I am in a classification where I do not have to work regular hours but can have a flexible schedule and the others resent this. Because of this, I worked a regular schedule plus extra for some time. However, my health is not good and at 60 years of age I do not know if it will improve so I have used the flexible schedule so I can have the stamina to keep going.

It appears that I may be fine financially because my father left me an inheritance, which my brother manages and he was just eeking it out for some time but he says he can take care of me and my expenses with the inheritance so I know I am so blessed and have nothing to complain about in comparison to the many people who do not know what they are going to do since they have lost their jobs.

Thus, I should not complain at all but I need help to release this hardness of heart I feel towards the Dean who terminated my job. and to the others who are gleeful about it (not all will be when they find out). He just had his secretary hand me the envelope in the middle of the hallway. She was smiling when she did so. It is just such a bad way to do someone whom you have called in your office every time you want it cleaned, whom you have sent to fetch your lunch many times, whom you have called on to write every major document for you in the last several years including letters of reference and so forth.

Can you help me remove this hard rock in my heart towards these people who have treated me so roughly and still do?

Thank you so much.

I’m so sorry for this event. I understand how you feel. At my last job I was let go (7mo pregnant) because they said the job “wasn’t a good fit for me.” In fact I was the one who was making the most progress in the department; heck I was making my boss actually do her job!

At any rate, what it comes down to is you have to give your hard rock to God. Don’t stew and fester about what has happened, but offer it to Him and ask Him for guidance for what you can do. It will take a while for healing to happen.

It sounds like the person becoming the Interim is more open and may help resolve the situation. May God’s will be done.

My prayers for you.

*If you truly feel it was discrimination of some sort, hire a lawyer. I’m not an advocate of suing in cases like this, unless I really feel that there is significant hardship placed on the person let go, or that you felt truly like you worked in a hostile environment. If those things fit the situation, seek an attorney and get some advice, at least.

I will keep you in my prayers…I’m sorry you’re going through this. :(*

Thank you so much for your kind reply whatever girl. I really do not have the health to go through litigation and another key administrator has just advised me that he thinks some of what this Dean has done will be overturned as soon as he leaves on 6/30/2009.

Thank you for your prayers. I will keep you in mine, also.
