There’s so much written about the late Bishop of Saginaw, Ken Untener. It makes me wonder how much people actually know of him from personal experience and how much is purely Catholic gossip that’s spread without restraint (and often without merit).

Just so we’re clear, I grew up in the Diocese of Saginaw under Bishop Reh and only briefly did I get to know Bishop Untener before leaving for college. I went to what was then considered a fine, upstanding Catholic university in Chicago. There I lived under Cardinals Cody, Bernadin and George…before returning to the Diocese of Saginaw a year ago. So yes, I have a well-rounded Catholic experience. Much of what’s been written about Untener in the last few years is so blatantly bogus that it hurts. Why would any Catholic be so blind to their own biases against someone without finding out the other side of the story?

You won’t like this, but I will tell you what I have heard. His Excellency was no doubt a nice guy, but he was at the very least deep in error. Rome is not sure what to do about the mess. The rumor I hear is that either they will send in someone to try and clean up or possibly suppress the diocese. Yes, it was and is that bad. So there you have it. Rome seems to be opting for the heretic choice.

Explain what it means to “suppress the diocese”…
