What has medieval philosophy ever done for us? Seriously, name a thinker of merit to emerge from the 5th to 15th century. Thomas Aquinas? William of Ockham? Mere curiosities today, one might argue; part of an irrelevant tradition of religious superstition.

Prof Peter Adamson, creator of the History of Philosophy Without any Gaps podcast and book series, begs to differ.

“For starters, precisely because of their importance in the history of religion, medieval philosophers remain relevant in some cultures and contexts,” he says.
I thought the premise of this article was important and submit it for discussion, not to endorse or disclaim it. It seems rather lengthy but some might find it interesting. It really is something to sit back on and contemplate rather than some straight-up argument that takes a few moments to digest. I’ve absorbed a bit.

Apparently, this Avicenna is consider an important astronomer, physician and thinker of the “Islamic golden medieval age”:

Avicenna (Ibn Sina) was one of the most famous Persian thinkers. He’s called the Father of Modern Medicine, but his influence went way beyond just medicine. He started out with philosophy, trying to reconcile Aristotle with Islamic theology, but also did a lot of observations with chemistry, astronomy, and came up with his own brand of logic.

Really a fascinating person with a fascinating life. You should read more about him! 🙂
