A few days back I was attending mass when something unusual happened. When it came time to receive Communion, the priest sat back and informed us that we could receive Communion under both species. I’m aware that this is permissible. However, after the priest made that announcement he sat back and had us approach the altar where we took the Host ourselves. We were not handed the Host by the priest or an extraordinary minister of Holy Communion. Was that permissible? Or was some serious canon law broken?
