As many as 100 US Anglican priests and 2,000 lay people could be the first members of a US Personal Ordinariate for former Anglicans who want to enter into full communion with the Catholic Church, Cardinal Donald Wuerl of Washington has said.
Cardinal Wuerl was appointed by the Vatican last September to guide the incorporation of Anglican groups into the Catholic Church in the United States under Anglicanorum coetibus, an apostolic constitution issued by Pope Benedict XVI in November 2009.
At a news conference, Cardinal Wuerl said he “wouldn’t be surprised” if the Vatican were to establish the US ordinariate by the end of the year. “I think it will be sooner rather than later,” he said. He was speaking after he had addressed the US bishops on the subject.
Assuming that all of those 100 Anglican priests end up being ordained as catholic priests, the ordinariate is going to have rather a DIFFERENT vocations problem than the rest of the catholic church in North America. One priest per 20 laymen???
It is also possible that many non-ordinariate Catholics will begin attending the masses offered by ordinariate priests. I would be interested in doing so.
That would be my best guess. Remember the 2,000 are not just one church but across the nation. Also there are men in diocese who are deciding on their own to convert, just like the did with the pastoral provision under John Paul ii. In our diocese we have quite a few. They are full roman priest.
I would also guess that if a new church has to use the facilities of another church and is only having one or two Anglican masses then the priest would have time to give his service to the roman diocese he is residing in. I have to think that the priest is going to have to have a good relationship with the diocese he lives in even though he is under the umbrella of the anglican ordinate. They are members of the roman rite they will just have their own diocese, much like the military diocese. And I can’t see the Anglican ordinate saying you can’t help other dioceses. We are all members of the same body. It’s not a competition and those new priest are going to need all the support they can get as the get use to being catholic priest. I can’t see them getting their own churches without training from the Romans.
It’s not a different rite. It’s part of the roman rite. All our priest are ordained roman priest and we are part of the diocese just like any other church. We give to the DSF fund etc. When we move to the ordinate it will be like going to a new diocese just with some extra changes to the uniqueness of the Anglican litgury. Such as evensong and the music and prayers (which can be found in the divine worship book)
You do need permission but we have different priest come from around the diocese. We use the roman Rite one for our mass setting. What throws off most priest is the ‘thee’ &thous and with thy spirit but come advent we are all going to sound more alike.
