I’m looking to buy a prayer book for myself and my husband…we’re being confirmed this next week and I thought it would be a nice “gift” to ourselves.
I’m looking for one that has the mass, the rosary, morning and evening prayers…I’ve looked at a few online and I see that some have the psalms to pray daily, some have many other prayers…Being new to all of this I just want to make the best possible choice, and I’d like to find one that has the updated mass. I also noticed that some didn’t include the luminous mysteries for praying the rosary. I guess I probably sound as overwhelmed as I feel.
Help??
thanks!

I haven’t heard of any single book that includes all that. However, it sounds like you want a missal combined with Shorter Christian Prayer. The missal will have the mass and some other prayers, while Shorter Christian Prayer has morning and evening prayer from the Liturgy of the Hours. You can find SCP for around $10-$15, but a missal will be more pricey. I don’t own one, so you might want to wait for the advice of others.

As for the rosary, I used this while learning to pray it: www.newadvent.org/images/rosary.pdf
I now have it completely memorized.

A prayer book that I have-and keep in mind I’m 31-is The Catholic Youth Prayer Book. It has most‚ if not all, of what you’re looking for. It’s by Saint Mary’s Press. Should be able to find it on Amazon.

Back in my Anglican days, I enjoyed the Book of Common Prayer which is exactly what you describe (minus the Rosary). It had the all the rites in one book plus Morning and Evening Prayer which went through all the Psalms. Shorter Christian Prayer on takes you through only some of the Psalms.

I wish there was something like the BCP for Catholics, but alas, I haven’t found anything.

You might want to consider a subscription to Magnificat, though.

Since we’re in the trad. forum, here are trad sources:
  1. Any good trad Missal will have the office and will have prayers for morning and evening. Some will also have vespers and compline for Sundays, which can actually be said every day unless you are bound to the office like a priest is.
  2. a great short book is “Blessed be God.” It has the Mass, readings for Sundays and days of obligation, and lots of meditations, morning and evening prayers, excerpts from scripture, prayers for different feasts and seasons … I love this book! It’s small enough to have with you always
It’s reprinted by PCP (Preserving Christian Publications).

Probably the best bet for you is “Handbook of Prayers” published by Scepter.

They have a new version with the new mass translation in it - and Latin on the other side, which is great. This is the most “comprehensive” prayer book I have ever seen.

So do you want one with the EF mass / more traditional or a good one for the new Mass?

Many 1962 daily missals not only include the Mass texts in Latin/English also include a section containing private devotions such as the Rosary and also parts of the Divine Office (morning/evening/night prayer or the Little Office of the BVM). I think the St Andrew missal, Angelus Press daily missal, and Baronius Press daily missal are all examples.
