Right before you were confirmed the priest does a short prayer and says “The Lord receives you into the Catholic Church.” Or something like that. Even if that was omitted for some reason, yes. You’re a Catholic now.

I too would be very very upset if someone had told me that when I had come into the church.

Another note: sometimes people say that confirmation is the person being confirmed choosing to be Catholic, making an adult decision for Christ. This is WRONG, so it might be possible that this woman was saying something along these lines and you two had a misunderstanding.

You are a member of the Catholic Church. You are a member of the Communion of Saints.

You are Catholic.

One thing I really like about the Catholic Church is that no matter how much of my life I’ve been outside the Church I’m just as much a member as anyone else is now. There’ll always be rotten apples, don’t let them spoil the beautiful bakset you’ve found. ❤️

Yes, you certainly are Catholic! Congratulations!

Did the lady perhaps mean that you still needed to register at the parish? I know for my parish newbies, they get confirmed at the Easter Vigil and become Catholic, but they still have to fill out the new parishioner registration form so they can get their weekly envelopes. 😝 Maybe that’s what she was talking about?

When you were Baptized you became a member of the Body of Christ. Confirmation is the completion of the Sacraments of Initiation.

Was she maybe talking about signing up to be in the database of the parish?

I’m not sure what the girl’s mom meant by ‘not a member’… when you are confirmed in Christ, you become a member of the Catholic Church through the Sacrament of Confirmation. Since you have already been baptized and confirmed, yes- you are a member of the Catholic Church.

Pax Christi!

I’m sorry!! Don’t be upset! I don’t think she knew what she was talking about, to be honest! Welcome to the Church! 🙂

Not only are you Catholic, but you are 100% just as much a member of the Church as anyone baptized the day they were born. You are as Catholic as the Pope. Someone baptized on their death bed is as much a member of the Church, the Body of Christ, as any of us. How could it be any other way, as we are in the Lord with only one life, not some greater lives and some lesser ones that are separate? There is only one True Vine and so there is only one life in Christ.
Some of us have a problem with that, but we all have problems to work through, don’t we?

It has always been this way:
“The kingdom of heaven is like a landowner who went out at dawn to hire laborers for his vineyard. After agreeing with them for the usual daily wage, he sent them into his vineyard. Going out about nine o’clock, he saw others standing idle in the marketplace, and he said to them, ‘You too go into my vineyard, and I will give you what is just.’ So they went off. And he went out again around noon, and around three o’clock, and did likewise. Going out about five o’clock, he found others standing around, and said to them, ‘Why do you stand here idle all day?’ They answered, ‘Because no one has hired us.’ He said to them, ‘You too go into my vineyard.’ When it was evening the owner of the vineyard said to his foreman, ‘Summon the laborers and give them their pay, beginning with the last and ending with the first.’ When those who had started about five o’clock came, each received the usual daily wage. So when the first came, they thought that they would receive more, but each of them also got the usual wage. And on receiving it they grumbled against the landowner, saying, ‘These last ones worked only one hour, and you have made them equal to us, who bore the day’s burden and the heat.’ He said to one of them in reply, ‘My friend, I am not cheating you. Did you not agree with me for the usual daily wage? Take what is yours and go. What if I wish to give this last one the same as you? Or am I not free to do as I wish with my own money? Are you envious because I am generous?’ Thus, the last will be first, and the first will be last.” (Matt. 20:1-16)

That’s the key! Once you get the weekly tithing envelopes, there is no doubt you’re in!! : )

To the OP - Welcome to the Church. You are a 100% certified, approved, in-the-club Catholic. Anyone who tries to tell you anything different is Just. Plain. Wrong.

Welcome to our family!
One thing to remember is the members of the Catholic faith are people too. We make mistakes and say stupid things. Don’t let that discourage you or your faith. Keep your focus on the Lord. Don’t be afraid to smile and move on.
That said, I’ve met some of the most loving and amazing people in the two years since I joined the church. So much generosity of resources and time, so much caring and love!
God Bless!

If you have been confirmed, then yes you are a member. The woman who told you this was incorrect. Welcome home!
