I’m no linguist, but I’ve read or heard from several different sources that the letter “v” was pronounced as a “w” in the Latin pronunciation of antiquity. This is the thing I like least about it.

Perhaps we really have three animals here: ancient Classical Latin of the sort Virgil would have recognized, modern “Classical” Latin as taught in recent centuries at least until recently, and Ecclesial Latin.

I’d also add a fourth: the way American biologists (not sure about the medical field or other professions) pronounce their Latin, which sounds like a dumb American trying to sound out Latin words, except certain things are pretty settled.

For example, Aceraceae is generally pronounced “ay-ser-ay-see-ee”. When I went to Russia for a biology class the Russians couldn’t understand the other Americans’ Latin names and I was able to translate with my very rudimentary knowledge of more proper Latin pronunciations.

English has a history mixing up the "u"s and "v"s as well. And it’s “double-you” not “double-vee” (“v v” as it used to be written). In the Polish alphabet there is no “v” and the “w” carries the “vee” pronunciation. Anglophones, however, like to pronounce Polish surnames as though they were "w"s though. OTOH, I had a Polish priest who used to pronounce the Latin “qui” as KVEE.
