Yesterday, I went to confession. It was literally, one of the most difficult spiritual weeks of my entire life. The priest himself was even a bit alarmed [it sounded like] and asked if I would take the Anointing of the Sick immediately after confession. [I did]. The question is, because of the discussion of what was going on, I didn’t finish confessing everything on my list [from the examination of conscience]. There was more, but the conversation went to finishing up and he absolved me of my sins. But there was more to say…and I didn’t get to say them. Was this a valid confession and can I go to Communion today or not, or do I need to back into the confessional???

Yes, it was valid. The priest can end the confession and give absolution before the whole list of sins is stated, for lack of time or whatever the circumstances may be.

calm down; the priest said you are absolved of your sins

you are absolved

the sacrament of confession is not supposed to be drama

rest easy shipmate

When you remember a sin that is mortal and that was not previously confessed in sacramental confession, then it is simply confessed next time. When it was not intended, it does not invalidate the absolution.

If there was no mortal sins, the you are fine. If there were mortal sins you did not confess, you should go to confession again.

Validity would only have been affected if you deliberately omitted anything grave.

You can (and should) confess any grave ones left out next time you go, though 🙂
