Quick question:
Is the compulsion to commit a sin a reducer of the culpability for mortal sin?
Today, I felt compelled to commit a sin of grave matter, and I am an EMCH for tonights feast of the Immaculate Conception.

Please, a quick and concice reply would be greatly appreciated.

Sometimes, sins out of habit or addictions may lessen the gravity of the sin

It is still a good idea to go to confession, especially if you will be recieving the body of Christ, and most especially if you will be an extraordinary minister. Call up your priest and ask if you can get in confession quickly before mass, that way you don’t have to worry about the weight of the sin.

Edit:

In reference to post #2, addiction does not lessen the gravity of the sin, rather it lessen’s the person’s ability to freely consent.

The three requirements for mortal sin are grave (serious matter,) free consent (your choice,) and knowledge (know its bad.)

In cases of addiction you don’t have the ability to freely choose, but it still remains a grave sin.

Thanks for the quick replies.
Turns out Mass started at 6:30, not 7:30 as I thought. It didn’t matter anyway.

I knew about the whole addiction thing, I didn’t know for sure if compulsion counted as another word for habit or addiction.

Thanks.
