Eloah / El Shaddai

El Shaddai or simply Shaddai are other titles of God. As has already been mentioned, El means ‘God’. The word shad means “woman’s breast” [7699], and shaddai [Strong’s 7706] means “breasts”, “breasted”, or “many breasts”. Though El Shaddai is translated as “Almighty God”, “God Almighty”, or “the Almighty” in the English Bible, it literally means “God with breasts” or “[many] breasted [One]” There are those who refuse to translate Shaddai as “breasts”, however, the parallelism of the language used in Jacob’s blessing, in Genesis 49:25, emphasizes that this is the correct translation.*

what on earth is this person talking about? and is she historically correct? and translating what the words from hebrew to english really mean? i dont understand any of it. why is she saying that God is a woman?**

Strictly speaking, she’s not saying God is a woman, she’s saying God is “beyond our comprehension” (her words) but that God encompasses all that is feminine as well as all that is masculine.

Her article focuses entirely on the feminine because she’s claiming that it has been suppressed, but she does note that “the names Elohim and Yahweh appear many more times than Eloah or El Shaddai in the Bible,” She points out that the vast majority of the uses are in Job, which is a challenging book for lots of reasons, but the underlying theme of which is “HELLO, THIS IS GOD. DO NOT BE FOOLED INTO THINKING YOU CAN UNDERSTAND ME! I AM WAY TOO INFINITE FOR YOUR BRAIN.”

She’s going for shock value with the “breasts” thing (I thought at first she was going to assert that the God of the Hebrews is the same as the Hindu deity.) I don’t read Hebrew so I can’t affirm or deny her translation. It’s not news that the word for the Spirit in Hebrew is feminine. Her riff on Wisdom is a switch, those trying to “feminize” Christianity generally draw the parallels between Wisdom in the OT and Logos in the NT.

Obviously she’s gone beyond the pale with the goddess stuff and the moon rites, but we should not be threatened by the notion that God is not limited by gender, since we know He is not limited by anything and that He is the Fullness of all that is good. We know that He chose to reveal Himself as Father, we also know that we cannot fully comprehend His reality.

I don’t think it’s appropriate to say God is angrogynous, though, because God is Spirit, not body. The only Flesh God has is male, it is Jesus (although, since we are His Body, that Body encompasses both men and women. But Paul says in Him we are “neither man nor woman, Jew nor Greek . . .” MYSTERY!

Hope that helps?

“El Shaddi” means God of the Mountains and God of the Breast. The former is a reference to the ancient mountains on which pagan gods were worshipped, whereby God is the God of gods: He is the All-Powerful God. The latter is a reference to the gift of fertility, which is why Almighy God is used when speaking of the blessing of fertility: God is the Source of all life, just as a mother is the source of life of her child. Yet God is not just the Source of life, He is the Life itself. Hence we come full circle to the All-Powerful God. So we see that there is no gender in God: rather, He is the Source and Summit of fatherhood and motherhood.
