I’ve gotten a new job that will require me to work three days on and three days off. This is what my work pattern for the next month (January 2008) will look like:
Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday
Sunday, Monday, Tuesday
Saturday,** Sunday,** Monday
Friday, Saturday, Sunday
As you can see, for the month of January, I will be working on three Sundays. My shifts begin at 8:30am and end at 8:30pm which means I will be working 12 hour days.
I will not be working set days. Every week I will work different days but it will always be three days on and three off.
I don’t know what to do. I hate the fact that I will miss Sunday Mass because I look forward to this every week. It really relaxes me and gets me ready for the week ahead. I love to spend time with the real presence in the Eucharist.
Another thing that saddens me is the fact that I will be unable to attend the Tridentine Mass. My church offers this Mass once a week at 11:30 on a Sunday and I will be working during this time. I like the Pauline Mass but the Tridentine Mass really enriches my spiritual life; I really love this Mass and I feel moved to attend.
I also meet with my Priest on Saturday for confession, and afterwards he teaches me CCD in preparation for my Confirmation. I am afraid that I will not be able to attend these sessions either.
What should I do? Will I be committing a mortal sin by working on Sundays? Can I fulfill my obligation during the week? For instance, could I attend Mass on a Wednesday instead of a Sunday on those weeks when I will be unable to attend on Sunday?
This is causing me a lot of stress. The job is important but my faith is even more important. I really don’t know what to do about this. I don’t want to put my job before the Lord but everyone says that I’ve got to earn a living and that God will understand. What do you think?
Any advice will be appreciated.
Thanks
