Urgent Mc Help - Midnight Mass

If anyone who has ever MCed a Novus Ordo can help me I would be appreciative.

I am going to MC for my first time tonight at the midnight mass, but I cant remember when I am supposed to go behind the altar with the celebrant and con-celebrants to begin turning the pages of the missal. Is after the Prayer over the Gifts or during the Sanctus? I cant remember please somebody help. Thanks so much you guys are great!

If you are going to be a regular MC you really should get a copy of the Sacramentary and study it. You can turn the page during the Sanctus so that the priest is ready to begin the EP as soon as it is finished being sung. No to be flippant, but why does the priest need someone to turn the pages for him. The only one in our diocese that has a regular MC is the bishop.

Will you be placing the Sacramentary on the altar at the Prep of the Altar? There are a few short prayers before the Prayer over the Gifts. Most priests here do this from memory. Immediately after he finishes the Prayer over the Gifts, he will want the Preface. Pages have to be turned to that. My guess is that is where he wants to you begin with the pages. And then on to the Eucharistic Prayer.

Show up early and take a close look at the sacramentary. its really not that difficult and relax you will do just fine. find you preface and EP and you are home free. Tell the priest this is the first time you are MCing. You will do just fine.

Yes it is Master of Ceremonies. Here is a tidbit of History…you likely have used this term all of your life and did not realize it is a Catholic Term.

The term originates from the Catholic Church. The Master of Ceremonies is an official of the Papal Court responsible for the proper and smooth conduct of the elegant and elaborate rituals involving the Pope and the Sacred Liturgy.

It is an ancient title and the Church has the names of the papal M.C. dating back to the 16th century…Commonly the M.C. is also the person who takes the popes/bishops mitre off and zucchetto during mass.
I have been asked to M.C…It is somthing that I will likely forge into more when I complete the diaconate. M.C. are most commonly used in my diocese with confirmations. It requires quite a bit of travel and often means being the chauffer for the bishop…my lead foot may cause me to lose the chauffer part.

I wanted to just thank everybody for all your help. I also wanted to let you know how it went:

I went up to the altar at the same time as the concelebrating priest did, during the prayer over the gifts. I was then able to turn the page to the preface and EP. It worked out well.

I am glad things went well for you. Now that you have the first time under your belt, I bet you cannot wait until the next time. Remember - Holy Week is just around the corner!
