In conversation recently with a very young journalist of a different vein (New York Times, The Economist, Wall Street Journal and the likes) I asked her how did she interview and prepare to make a good impression and get her gigs at such a young age.
She said she studied her target employer style intensely. She then wrote 1or 2 good articles in their style, often traveling and immersing herself in the topic, even if she had to sleep at a train station or eat crackers due to budget. (For her last scientific report, she went to Canada, UK, Norway and Sweden)
Then she obtained a face to face interview (no resumé sent via email –only teasers) and when the question of lack of experience or young age came up, she’d pop the articles, well printed, cover and all, and say, “you be the judge.” She got her job, every time.
So, research who’s hiring by asking, not through the “front door” (website, indeed, etc.). But even if they are not, if you like them, make a proposal, show up and make them want you.
Get a personal referral if possible. And have a plan. Not only show what you’ve done, but show that you can “speak their language.”
However, before anything else, get on your knees, find and define your purpose, and make sure that your next step will help fulfill it. If God doesn’t want it, He won’t bless it. No point putting your efforts in a failed project. So ask God where He wants you next, complete an MBTI online to be sure you are addressing your whole God-given toolbox, and believe in yourself. You can’t sell it if you are not convinced of it yourself.
Are you worth it?
If you found your mission, you should be crazy bold about it, and others will notice.
Also, you should be ready to make radical changes if needed. Be sure the reason you haven’t found job yet is not because you have decided the parameters and conditions based on you and your “wants” without checking with the Boss…
No room for fear. No chance of failure. Only faith and stealth –nothing wrong with putting all planning and hard work into finding your next mission. Being clever is about using all the gifts you received.
May God bless you, may you find reassurance in His presence next to you, His perfect timing, and His plan for your life.
(And an apology, darn, I can’t get the Coach out of me, I guess…)
