urgent question: fasting before Eucharist

Hello,

this is sort of an urgent question… I usually attend the morning Mass and I fast from the night before (don’t eat breakfast) so this hasn’t really come up before… but today I want to go to the evening Mass, and I attend an FSSP parish… I wasn’t sure, - for the Latin Mass, is the fast also one hour? or is it three?

This gets sort of complicated because I’m also Eastern Catholic and I’m not sure which rule to follow when going to the Latin Mass… the Eastern one, post VII, or pre VII. I’ll ask at the Eastern Catholic section as well but I wanted to check here about the Latin Mass (today, not pre VII).

Within the Latin Church, the fasting requirement is established by the Code of Canon Law, not by the liturgical books. Therefore, the use of older liturgical books does not carry with it any obligation to observe fasting requirements no longer in place. The universal fasting requirement in the Latin Church is 1 hour.

If you are actually a member of an Eastern Catholic rite, I would suspect that your rite’s fasting requirement, if different from the Latin rite’s, applies to you no matter where you are receiving Communion. I can’t say I’m certain about that, though.

Canon 713 - §1. The Divine Eucharist is to be distributed in the celebration of the Divine Liturgy, unless a just cause suggests otherwise.
§2. Concerning the preparation for participation in the Divine Eucharist through fast, prayers and other works, the Christian faithful are to observe faithfully the norms of the Church sui iuris in which they are enrolled, not only within the territorial boundaries of the same Church, but, inasmuch as it is possible, everywhere.

This is the canon for the Easterners. It is up to you how do you interpret the ‘inasmuch as it is possible’

Mark Thompson is correct. If you elect to follow the 3 hour fast rule that is your choice but the Church rule is but one hour.
