URGENT: St. Nicholas's is Dec. 6!

Once again, St. Nicholas’s Day is sneaking up on us.

Be vigilant! St. Nicholas does not come on Dec. 24!

I have just procured some gold chocolate coins and Toblerones from World Market and am planning to wash the kids’ slippers in time for the big day.

Clean slippers plus chocolate, some assembly required.

Also, in other important Advent news, we were just at Aldi’s and they have a very nice selection of affordable fancy holiday sweets. We are planning a return trip for before Christmas. The Germans really know how to do Christmas.
 
I cheated and bought candy last year and froze half (I do this for Easter and Halloween too, and it always tastes just as good!) But yes, Aldi has really nice chocolate. 😉

I thought St. Nicholas only home-delivered to Poland on the 6th and left the rest until Christmas Eve?!

So, do Elves work at Aldi?
 
If you have a Homegoods store in your area, they have a really good selection of fancy-pants Christmas chocolates and candies. They even have those little Mozart balls and Turkish delight! (whatever that is…)

Yes, Trader Joe’s (hippie version of Aldi’s) also has a great selection of gold chocolate coins and other Advent or Christmas traditional treats or foods. I grabbed two bags of coins to split between my five kids and our slippers are ready to go, too!
 
I just ordered pound and pounds of the coins from Amazon fro our Deacon (who is a dead ringer for St. Nicholas) to hand out at Sunday school.
Aldi carries them as well, as does Cracker Barrel if you don’t need a whole lot of them.

Turkish Delights are very popular in Ireland. Joe lit up when he saw that. 😃

My German ancestors did not bother with slippers. There was no chocolate during Advent; St. Nicholas filled a huge bowl with nuts and oranges and orange-flavored candies. (Some of us are old enough to remember when oranges were not available year 'round…)
 
“Turkish delight” is also called “loukum” or “loukoumi.” There’s a very good US kind called Aplets, from a company called Liberty Orchards.

Basically it’s fruit pectin plus sugar, creating a fruit gel, and then you put powdered sugar on top. Also sometimes with nuts. Yummy!

Aplets and Cotlets are Turkish Delight? I did not know that. Poor ol’ Edmund, he should have known to never take Aplets from strangers…

Pretty much everything produced by Liberty Orchards is superb.

If you live in WA, their factory tour is fun.

I got a box of those as a gift from a parent once and they were good. Sort of like gum drops with nuts in them and no food coloring.

Isn’t St. Nicholas’ feast technically suppressed this year in favor of the Second Sunday of Advent? Does St. Nicholas work on Sundays? It is a day of rest after all…
