Hi Daisy,
I realize you’re kidding around, so - please dont take this wrong way - but, eh-hem, just to be sure…
They really did leave sacrifices to what they believe to be the volcano goddess. The volcano goddess’ name is Pele. The flowers were some of the offerings, and it looks like they left food and drinks, too.
In a way, while we Catholics obviously take a different view on faith and sacrifice, their offering still kind of shows us what little power we have as humans. What I mean is, if you look at those few flowers and other things they offered, and you then compare it all to the massive and highly destructive power of the lava - I really don’t think those drinks are going to put out that fire without some divine assistance… Against such odds - they’re hoping against all hope, and so they really are on a wing and a prayer.
I dont know anything about their beliefs, but - I guess - if I were Pele, I’d probably stop the lava at the flowers. Drinks are one thing, but flowers are other, living things… So - if I were Pele - I’d probably stop at the flowers…
That said, we have a living and merciful God in Christ Jesus, who overcame the world out of love and charity to save all His creatures. So - if we feel tempted or frightened - let us have faith in our prayers for them. It would turn that mountain upside down and throw it into the pond.
