Is Uriel considered an archangel in the Byzantine Tradition? If so, why he is venerated there and not in the West? would it be wrong to include him in my prayers since I am Latin? (I love to ask the angels’ intercession)

I’m not sure about the Byzantine question, but it should be alright to have devotion to him. A bit of research will show that many Catholic stores carry statues and holy cards of him, not that that means anything. But you certainly wouldn’t be the only one.
St. Ambrose also cites the apocryphal 4 Esdras, in which Uriel appears.

4 Esdras is considered canonical in the Byzantine tradition, therefore St. Uriel (whose name means Light of God) is one of the 7 Archangels.

On the Byzantine Calendar, 9 November is the Feast of the Bodiless Powers of Heaven.

I think he is venerated - sometimes - in the West; at least in the parish I was brought into the Church in. Our adoration chapel there has two statues of angels adoring the Host; one of them has the name “Uriel” carved on the side.

I also saw an icon, written by a Franciscan, with the names of all 7 archangels written around it.

It is? Is it in the translation that your Church has approved for liturgical use? Does any of it form the readings for Sunday liturgy?

Just curious as I have never heard this before.

:yup: In my current parish, we have stained glass windows with angels on them, including Uriel. (I’d never heard the name before; I had to go look it up, lol.)

Not all the Bible has ever been read liturgically in our tradition.

This does not stop the LXX from being the official Bible of the Byzantine Churches.

A lot of Latin Catholics are unfamiliar with how things work for Eastern Christians. They assume the Latin way is the norm of Christianity.

Cluny,

I do understand that.

Is 4 Esdras part of the LXX?
I didn’t think that it was.

Yes he is. The names of the seven archangels in the Byzantine tradition is the same for both Byzantine Catholics and Orthodox. Even though Pope Zachary denounced the last four Archangels, probably do to many Roman Christians worshiping rather than just venerating these Archangels. That statement was “only” meant for the Roman Church, not for the Eastern Churches. It was made way before the Schism of 1054. But there are many Roman Catholics today who venerate St. Uriel as well. Remember that the source of this list is both Holy Scripture and Holy Tradition, which in the East are equally inspired sources. So yes I as well as many Christians of the East do believe in all seven and pray for their intersession. They are mainly talked about during the Synaxis of the Holy Archangels and Angels. If you want to further research this. The Coptics have different names for the seven Archangels. The last three sometimes vary by name.
A point to ponder. The earliest Christian mention is by Pope Gregory I who lists them as Michael, Gabriel, Raphael, Uriel (or Anael), Simiel (or Samael), Oriphiel and Zachariel. Now if Pope Zachary denounced the last four, than Pope Gregory would be in error. I doubt he was in error. But “always” remember the Archangels and Angels are to be “venerated”, and “never” worshiped. Worship is for only the thrice Holy Trinity.
  1. St Michael
  2. St Gabriel
  3. St Raphael
  4. St Uriel
  5. St Selaphiel
  6. St Jegudiel
  7. St. Barachiel
Here is a neat Icon of all seven

God Bless.

Correct. It removed the public cultus, but not any private veneration.

I would really love to see a school named after St. Uriel. It would be fun to watch a 4th Grade football team take to the field as the “St. Uriel Smiters” 🙂

Interesting. I was only aware of 3. You learn something new every day!

I think I’m going to suggest that we name our Ukrainian Catholic Mission after St. Uriel.

thank you everyone for your (name removed by moderator)ut:)

4 Esdras is not read at any of the services, but then neither is Esther, Obadiah, or even Revelation. Oddly enough, neither is the Pericope de Adultera (John 8).

But all these books are still accepted as canonical.

I’m speaking of the Byzantine tradition here. I don’t know about the others.
