Author Pat Conroy, who chronicled both the beauty and the pain of growing up in the American South, has died at age 70 after a bout with pancreatic cancer.

Conroy’s publisher announced the news late Friday, saying the author known for his lyrical prose died at home in Beaufort, South Carolina, surrounded by friends and family.

Conroy’s novels often described troubled family relationships juxtaposed with descriptions of the natural beauty of coastal South Carolina - an area known for hospitality and gracious living, but also a dark history of slavery and racism.

I enjoyed his books.

My father died when I was a young child, but one of my most vivid memories of him is during a family vacation. He was reading a book and repeatedly convulsing in laughter. I remember him laying on the couch with this book, laughing uncontrollably, with tears running down his face, unable to catch his breath. He was reading The Great Santini.
 
Praying for the repose of Pat Conroy’s soul & for his family.
 
I actually teared up when I heard this news last night. I love his books, especially Beach Music, South of Broad and Prince of Tides.

I started South of Broad, but then it seemed to lead toward sexual abuse by a priest. Since you read it, is that what it’s about? Pat has an abusive childhood. His parish church thought they were an exemplary family, but obviously did t know about the domestic violence aimed mostly at his mother. And he had a Catholic priest as an uncle that wasn’t a good example!

It has been a while since I read it but I don’t remember the sexual abuse by the priest as being a very big part of the novel. Now I’m thinking I need to reread it because, although I remember liking it a lot, I don’t remember a lot of the specifics of it. (I’m finding that to be one of the few advantages of getting older-I can read books over and over-lol.)
 
Robert Duvall does a great job in “The Great Santini” I just watched it again when I saw that Conroy died. RIP.
 
I had to read The Water is Wide for an online college course. I’ve also seen the movie Conrack with Jon Voight. May Pat Conroy rest in peace.
